What should be the punishment for crime against humanity?

That's why the prison time is time to get rehabilitated, not just to wallow in contempt.
It would be good if prison can actually change a criminal's heart and make him a kind person. I doubt it very much.
But prison is basically a consequence for doing crime, so, when a person knows what could happen if he does crime, it may stop him, in some cases or situations.
That consequence should be known to people in their childhood. So, someone like Hitler or Saddam, or Putin, may not have become who they became later. But once they became dictator it is too late for them to believe that there will be a consequence. A nice prison, is not enough scary consequence to stop such criminals.

And neither is capital punishment. No threat will stop people who don't think they ever get caught and people who do realize they may get caught, rarely commit any crimes. (You may think that it is worth to commit a felony like speeding if it might save your employment.)
