What songs make you cry and why?

just wondering if any songs have such an impact on people that they make them cry and why.
I'm currently listening to never went to church by the streets which makes me cry every time as it reminds me of my Grandad who passed away last year.
other songs that make me cry include:
The killing of Georgie - Rod Stewart
Nans song - Robbie Williams
Two little boys - Rolf harris
Everybody hurts - REM!

Miss Sarajevo - U2 & Pavarotti

Is there a time for keeping your distance
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with your day

Is there a time for gold and lipstick
A time for coloring hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear

Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown

Is there a time to run for cover
A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colors
Different names you find it hard to spell

Is there a time for First Communion
A time for East Seventeen
Is there a time to turn to Mecca
Is there time to be a beauty queen

Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes
Surreal in her crown

al'Dino - Bosanska (Bosnian)

I previse je tuzno da bi'se smijao (It's too sad for me to laugh)
I sve je ono ruzno lijepo postalo (All that was ugly has become beautiful)
I ko za gdje bi'bio da sam tada zaspao (And who knows where I'd be if I'd fallen asleep then)
A kako stvari stoje sve je ovdje zaspalo (And the way things are, everything is asleep around here)

Ja sam sada rijeka izmedu dvije obale (Now I am a river between two banks)
Koje sanjaju da se jednom sastave (That dreams to unite once)
A ja u neko crno more da se ulijem (And for me to flow into some black sea)
I bilo gdje da odem samo da ovdje ne proticem (And to go wherever, as long as I'm flowing here)

Moja ljubav nema boje i nema mirisa (My love has no color or odor)
Jos u srcu cuvam zadnje zrno prkosa (Still in my heart, I keep the last drop of defiance)
Osuden da prastam, da svoja vrata otvaram (Condemned to forgive, to open my doors)
Volim je a boli me ova pjesma Bosanska (I love it, but it hurts, this Bosnian song)

well, the song at the end credits of the movie "black hawk down" but thats tears of pride i guess, because they died for our country trying to help people and here they are finally getting a beautiful tribute....of course i dont shed physical tears, i cry silent ones

Danijela Martinovic's dedication to God still makes me cry because she comes from a Roman Catholic background, but still composed such a beautiful song which she dedicated to "Bosnian Muslims and our God".

Jos jedan dan je prosao (One more day has passed)
Jos jedan mjesec dosao (One more month has come)
Tiho ko neki dragi gost (Quietly, like a dear guest)
Da mi do jutra bude most (To keep me till the morn)

Jer tuga vodi me (Pain has lead the way)
Kroz godine (Day after day)
I krade san (Stealing my sleep)
Dok novi ne svane mi dan (Till the dawn of a new day)

Neka mi ne svane (Make the sun never rise)
Nek' me nema (May I fade away)
Nek' me ne bude (May I cease to be)
Neka me bez tebe ne probude (May I never wake without you)

Perhaps a strange one for me, but overlooking the obviously Christian references... the meaning makes me cry, and I do enjoy the song.

You left your Bible on the dresser
So I put it in the drawer
Because I can't seem to talk to God without yelling anymore

When I sit at your piano
I can almost hear those hymns
Now the keys are just collecting dust, but I can't close to lid

You left my heart as empty as a Monday morning Church
It used to be so full of faith, but now it only hurts
I can hear the devil whisper, things are only getting worse
You left my heart as empty as a Monday morning Church

The preacher came by Sunday, said he missed me at the service
Told me Jesus loves me, but I'm not sure I deserve it
Because the faithful man that you loved is nowhere to be found
Since He took all that he believed and laid it in the ground

And left my heart as empty as a Monday morning Church...

I still believe in heaven, and I'm sure you've made it there
As for me, without your love, I don't have a prayer

You left my heart as empty as a Monday morning Church

Feathers in Hair

World's Tallest Hobbit
"Blue" from the "Cowboy BeBop" soundtrack. It was playing as my favorite character Absolutely Didn't Die No Matter What Other Members Might Say.
Never seen a bluer sky
Yeah, I can feel it reaching out and moving closer.
There's something about blue.
Asked myself what it's all for
You know the funny thing about it?
I couldn't answer.
No, I couldn't answer.

Things have turned a deeper shade of blue
And images that might be real,
May be illusion,
Keep flashing off and on.

Free
Wanna be free.
Gonna be free.
And move among the stars.
You know they really aren't so far

Feels so free.
Gotta know free.
Please
Don't wake me from the dream.
It's really everything it seemed
I'm so free
No black and white in the blue.

Everything is clearer now.
Life is just a dream, you know.
That's never ending
I'm ascending.

Also, "Turnaround" by the Kingston Trio. My dad used to sing it to my sister and I as a lulluby when we were growing up, and it always would make me start to cry.
Where are you going, my little one, little one? Where are you going, my baby, my own?
Turn around and you're two. Turn around and you're four. Turn around and you're a young girl going out of the door.

Turn around. Turn around. Turn around and you're a young girl going out of the door.

Where are you going, my little one, little one? Little dirndls and petticoats, where have you gone?
Turn around and you're tiny. Turn around and you're grown. Turn around and you're a young wife with babes of your own.

Turn around. Turn around. Turn around and you're a young wife with babes of your own.

these are the lyrics to the end credits song of black hawk down, while listening to it you are reading the entire casualty list, it hits you pretty hard.

The Minstrel Boy

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you will find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;

"Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell but the foeman's steel
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he loved never spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;

And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!

Glass half Panda'd
Fast Car -- Tracy Chapman

why: The story is about a woman who tries everything in her power to make it out into the city, away from the penury she's exposed to. She remembers, through various stages of her life, an incident where she's the passenger in a car, and she recalls how it made her happy, and hopeful.

The point is that no matter your situation, the universal theme of making better for yourself and belonging are paramount to human existance. The hope that this woman carries with her through the story, and the feeling she exudes as she's explaining her past flows through her voice. You can feel her pain and contemplative attitude through the piece. Empathy is what leads me to feel for this woman and cry with her.

i love that song aswell as many of her others, she really is a gifted song writer and singer, i do think sub-city is a more powerfull and moving song though!

Smoke

Done here.
There Were Roses
by Tommy Sands

So my song for you this evening, it's not to make you sad
Nor for adding to the sorrows of our troubled northern land
But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind
I'll tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine

Isaac Scott from Banagh, he lived just across the fields
A great man for the music, the dancing and the reels
McDonald came from South Armagh to court young Alice fair
And we often met on the Ryan Road and laughter filled the air

-Chorus-
There were roses, roses
There were roses
And the tears of a people ran together

Now Isaac he was Protestant and Sean was Catholic born
But it never made a difference, for the friendship it was strong
And sometimes in the evening when we heard the sound of drums
We said it won't divide us, we always will be one

For the ground our fathers plowed in, the soil it is the same
And the places where we say our prayers have just got different names
We talked about the friends who'd died and hoped there'd be no more
It was little then we realized the tragedy in store

-Chorus-

It was on a Sunday morning when the awful news came round
Another killing had been done just outside Newry Town
We knew that Isaac danced up there, we knew he liked the band
But when we heard that he was dead we just could not understand

We gathered round the graveside on a cold and rainy day
The minister he closed his eyes and for no revenge he prayed
And all of us who knew him from along the Ryan Road
We bowed our heads and said a prayer for the resting of his soul

-Chorus-

Now fear it filled the countryside there was fear in every home
When late at night a car came prowling round the Ryan Road
A Catholic would be killed tonight to even up the score
Oh Christ it's young McDonald they've taken from the door

Isaac was my friend! he cried, he begged them with his tears
But centuries of hatred have ears that do not hear
An eye for an eye, it was all that filled their minds
And another eye for another eye till everyone is blind

-Chorus-

So my song for you this evening, it's not to make you sad
Nor for adding to the sorrows of our troubled northern land
But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind
I'll tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine

Now I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end
But I wonder just how many wars are fought between good friends
And those who give the orders are not the ones to die
It's Scott and McDonald and the likes of you and I

"Far Away" - Nickelback

This time, This place
Misused, Mistakes
Too long, Too late
Who was I to make you wait
Just one chance
Just one breath
Just in case there's just one left
'Cause you know,
you know, you know

[CHORUS]
I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me
and you'll never go
Stop breathing if
I don't see you anymore

On my knees, I'll ask
Last chance for one last dance
'Cause with you, I'd withstand
All of Hell to hold your hand
I'd give it all
I'd give for us
Give anything, but I won't give up
'Cause you know,
you know, you know

[CHORUS]

So far away
So far away
Been far away for far too long
So far away
So far away
Been far away for far too long
But you know, you know, you know

I wanted
I wanted you to stay
'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long
So keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go

" When a child is born" Johnny Mathis.............

This song was broadcat on the 8th December 1978, on my way home from the hospital after just having witness my son (Andrew)'s birth......for obvious reasons.

Heck, I cry at so many songs I couldn't possibly list them..........:fox:

The only song that has ever made me cry is "Soma" by Smashing Pumpkins. The "na na na" coda is sooo beautiful and the music ethereal. Absolutely gorgeous.

I 2nd that one.... reminds me of friends since lost in one way or another.

"The Dance" - Garth Brooks: relationship issues
"Grace"- John McDermott (Irish Tenors): Just one of those songs I guess.... (then again any of thier songs could make you cry if you were in the mood)
Any song- by anyone: when I'm in an emotional mood:cover:

The video is out of place, it's from Star Wars. But the song is Comrade Tito - our dedication to our communist dictator.

I remember on the anniversary of his death, I was 9 or 10 years old, and my mother had to be carried away from the memorial when this song played. It still makes me cry, and Tito died just before I was born - I never even knew him as a leader. My Grandmother is still all torn up about it. She still says "By Tito!" instead of "God willing!".

Last Kiss

Oh, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road, up straight ahead
A car was stalled, the engine was dead
I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right

I'll never forget the sound that night
The screamin' tires, the bustin' glass
The painful scream that I heard last.

Oh, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

When I woke up, the rain was pourin' down
There were people standing all around
Something warm rollin' through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said
"Hold me darling just a little while."
I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love that I knew I would miss
But now she's gone, even though I hold her tight
I lost my love, my life that night.

Oh, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.
Oooh ooooh

Butterfly Kisses

There's two things I know for sure:
She was sent here from heaven and she's
daddy's little girl.
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and
I thank god for all the joy in my life
Oh, but most of all
For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer;
sticking little white flowers all up in her
hair; "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny, Daddy, but I sure tried."
In all that I've done wrong I know I must
have done something right to deserve a hug
every morning and butterfly kisses at night.

Sweet 16 today
She's looking like her mama a little more everyday
One part woman, the other part girl.
To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls
Trying her wings out in a great big world.

But I remember
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking
little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you, Daddy, But if you
don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong I must have done
something right to deserve her love every morning
and butterfly kisses at night.

All the precious time
Like the wind, the years go by.
Precious butterfly.
Spread your wings and fly.

She'll change her name today.
She'll make a promise and I'll give her away.
Standing in the bride-room just staring at her.
She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not
sure-I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."
She leaned over...gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there,
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk my down the aisle, Daddy-it's just about time."
"Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don't cry!"

Oh, with all that I've done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve your love every morning and butterfly
kisses-I couldn't ask God for more, man this is what love is.

I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember
every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses.
