Be Still My Soul

Be still, my soul:
the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently
the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God
to order and provide;
In every change,
He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul:
thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways
leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul:
thy God doth undertake
To guide the future,
as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence
let nothing shake;
All now mysterious
shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul:
the waves and winds
still know His voice
Who ruled them
while He dwelt below.
3. Be still, my soul:
when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened
in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know
His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe
thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul:
thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness
all He takes away.

Be still, my soul:
the hour is hastening on
When we shall be
forever with the Lord.
When disappointment,
grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot,
love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul:
when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed
we shall meet at last.

Be still, my soul:
begin the song of praise
On earth, believing,
to thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him
in all thy works and ways,
So shall He view
thee with a well-pleased eye.
Be still, my soul:
the Sun of life divine
Through passing clouds
shall but more brightly shine.

This version makes me cry. It's number 7 on the page. It makes me cry because of the messaage and how it touches my spirit.

Mother Heathen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBiO5SS5I38 - I'd rather not comment. This song stirs emotion due to the association. This song will forever be associated with someone that I loved very much. And so, it's always going to pluck at my heart strings a bit when I hear it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQKVlktcPUc - I think this song will always break my heart. Takes me back to a very sad break up.

And alas...the song that always stirs about painful memories...NIN - Something I can Never Have (Oh and if there's a curse word here or there...I didn't notice. Just be warned)

Oh yeah...and "Winter" and "Mother" by Tori Amos. Sighs...

In Christian music...

Todd Agnew tends to make me cry (in a good way, of course). "Grace Like Rain" and "My Jesus" mean a lot to me. They remind me of who I am. And I think a lot can be learned in the song My Jesus.

Empty Chairs At Empty Tables

There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone

Here they talked of revolution
Here it was they lit the flame
Here they sang about tomorrow
And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lowly barricade..
At dawn.

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me.

That I live and you are gone
There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on

Phantom faces at the window
Phantom shadows on the floor
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.

Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more...

I tend to tear up over the beauty of a song more than if it presents a sad story of some kind.

"Mary" - by Patty Griffin
"Dreaming My Dreams With You" - Allison Krauss
"Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" - John Prine
"Mother" - Kasey Chambers
"The Way You Dream" - Michael Stipe (from 1 Giant Leap)

Lightening Crashes by Live makes me cry everytime I hear it. It was the song I was listening to in 10th grade when I got the phone call that one of my close friends died in a car accident.

Jim Varney - Gee I'm Glad It's Raining
Gee I'm glad it's raining
There's always something to be thankful for.
I'm awfully glad it's raining
Cause no one sees the tear drops when it pours.

And no one knows the thunder
As your heart breaks in the sky,
And they think those rainy nights
Cause that sad look in your eye.

Sure am glad it's raining.
The gentle river soothes the pain inside.
I'm glad the stars aren't shining.
This wounded warrior needs a place to hide.

I thought I had found someone
I could count til the end.
What they wanted was a hero,
All I needed was a friend

Gee I'm glad it's raining.
I hope the morning sun won't come up soon.
As long as it keeps raining,
No one knows my heart broke right in two.

I thought I had found someone
I could count til the end.
What they wanted was a hero,
All I needed was a friend

Sure am glad it's raining.
I'm awfully glad it's raining

well, the song at the end credits of the movie "black hawk down" but thats tears of pride i guess, because they died for our country trying to help people and here they are finally getting a beautiful tribute....of course i dont shed physical tears, i cry silent ones
My best friends uncle was nearly a part of the actual events that movie was based on. We're actually thankfull he got into a fight with a cop a day before he was to be shipped out.

I've never cried during a song, but Pantera's Cemetary Gates does send chills down my spine.

Tool - Lateralus has made me cry, thought it's not a sad song.
Cat Stevens - Father and Son also...
Neil Young - Heart of Gold...
Yes - And You and I... not because it's sad... just because.
A song by Simon and Garfunkel but I can't remember which atm. Might be Kathy's Song but I don't think so.
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon and the Live Version of Comfortably Numb or alternatively the original from The Wall

The live versions from the Pulse concerts... you can pick it up on DVD dirt cheap... the other is from the movie The Wall... if you haven't heard of this, now you have. To be honest it's difficult to watch... not because it's bad. I'm a floyd freak, but have only seen it once. You'll feel uncomfortable... but you HAVE to see it, even if it is just that once.

And yes... that is Sir Bob "Live Aid/8" Geldof playing the main character in The Wall.

Many Elliott Smith songs
Cat Power - Maybe Not
Cat Power - Names
Modest Mouse - Life like Weeds
Modest Mouse - The Stars are Projectors

And a small handful of Tori Amos songs
