what the bible says about vegetarianism

proverbs 12:10 says that a good person is kind to their animals while a mean person is cruel.

most factory farms are cruel to their animals. buying such meat and dairy supports cruelty. that is why it is wrong to BUY said meat. however, if you need the nutrients and can't afford better meat, or you can't get to better meat, or if it's just going to go bad anyway, then it's ok. but if those circumstances don't apply, then the only kind of meat or dairy that it's ok to buy is when it came from animals raised sustainably.

romans 14:15 says that if you are hurting others by the foods you eat, you are not guided by love, and not to let your appetite destroy someone Christ died for.

this seems like a reference to all the environmental problems from the meat industry. some of those problems are:

1. A 2006 united nations report called the meat industry "one of the top two or three most significant contributers to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from global to local."
2. The meat industry uses half of all water in the USA.
3. Feeding a meat eater requires 10 times more farmland than it does to feed a vegetarian.
4. About 10 billion land animals in this country alone face all types of torture and death... EACH YEAR. Compare that to about 50 million abortions in the past 40 years, and you tell me which one is more important.
5. The livestock industry has contributed 18 percent of all greenhouse gasses.
6. Decaying meat lines our intestines and makes it more difficult to properly absorb nutrients.
7. Meat is acidifying to our bodies (being too acidic causes most of the damage associated with aging, and causes cancer)

Your telling me that i shouldnt have my fill of protien because an animal died @_@
it also says in the bible
Genesis 9:1-3 "Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all of the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, now I give you everything."
Luke 24:42-43, "And they gave him (Jesus) a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them."
>.> bible says eat meat.
abortion is more important than an animal. Babies death vs animals death. You decide.
Stop eating such unhealthy meat and you wont have that problem. for 6 and 7. jesus.

the bible also gives instances when you should not buy certain meats, and that we should generally eat only a little little meat.

1.Proverbs are not laws. They are sayings. Advice if you will, but not law.
2. The Noahide laws pertaining to meat, which were partially pointed out by Annathebeast, are a little bit more elaborate than that. Meat so fresh the animal may be alive is a no-no. Its cruel and inhumane.
They also state not to eat animals that have died from natrual causes, were killed by another animal, are being eaten by carnivorous animals, and-for lack of a better word- roadkill.
3. It does tell one what not eat. Pork, shellfish, certain mammals, fowl, and fish. As well as what part of the kosher animal we are restricted from eating.

I don't mind romans 14:2 telling me I'm weak, as long as the meek inherit the earth, but also because of romans 14:23, that says that if there is any doubt, then don't eat it, because going against your own beliefs is against sin.

I am a vegetarian and a long time supporter of the idea that Jesus was a vegetarian. I'm a bit burnt out on the subject, so I'll just say what I feel needs to be said in this statement (and should be proof enough): John the Baptist was a vegetarian, as well as James the Just (believed to be Jesus' brother). Clearly, this is enough to determine that Jesus MOST LIKELY did not consume meat.

One more thing, I know its not relevant to Christianity so I don't know how serious any of you will take it, but in an Islamic text Jesus is quoted as saying, "Flesh eating flesh? How offensive of an act!"

For John the Baptist:
4John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.
Matthew 3:3-5

"Locusts" is interpreted as a bean from the Carob tree. Because of this, the seeds are sometimes called "St. John's bread"

There is no Biblical support for James the Just. However St. Hegesippus, who was a chronicler of early Christianity, mentions James the Just being vegetarian. "After the apostles, James the brother of the Lord surnamed the Just was made head of the Church at Jerusalem. Many indeed are called James. This one was holy from his mother's womb. He drank neither wine nor strong drink, ate no flesh, never shaved or anointed himself with ointment or bathed. To him alone it was permitted to enter the holy place; for he wore nothing woollen, but linen garments."
