What the "Holy Book" permits . . .

I have noticed a new trend amongst religious reformists. When they bring forth often radical or heterodox opinions they always try backing it with their religious text that is the core of their religion. The issue is that very few progressive ideas have any place in many religions. Homosexuality, peace, or even marrying a person outside of one's faith is disliked by many religions.

Why is it that the religious can never back their assertions with reason instead of appeals to a holy book? Is it that the religious are intellectually bankrupt that they cannot be reasoned with?

Sha:

We are ever changing, and we ever remain the same. We are permitted to be holy. We are permitted to keep sacred the heart where joy and peace are.
Every culture has this. Revocation of these permissions have setback consequence. There are many examples, take your lead sister/brother.

On the actual topic...something that bothers me on a regular basis is the parroting of others, instead of another man/woman's opinion you get scripture or set, repetitive responses. Between all the religious traditions of the world there is a rather large gap when it comes to thinking for yourself, in regards to religion itself most often and sadly other areas of life...too often.

It shouldn't be so easy to look up somebody's "thoughts" or "opinion" before they even answer a question you may ask them.

I'll save people from my reposting of the robot meme again :)

Seems like another topic, perhaps ego? Would be a great way to get that off the pretense of the cross you bear?

I wasn`t intending to be a robot, I posted a scripture because it was in agreement with the idea that a bible alone is not enough.

More like we have a confused, often contradictory understanding of religiosity. Scripture is by definition static, blind and unaware of changes in scientific knowledge and social environment, and therefore invariably of poor significance in any living religion.

For whatever reason, most people fail to accept that and appeals to scripture are in fact very popular, perhaps because they are often impossible to deny.

Or perhaps it is as simple as different people reading scripture as justifying different ideas and having trouble admitting that there is any ambiguity or simply wrong meanings.

This is my big complaint. The fact that holy books are just cultural pieces that are for the most part like old folk stories collected into a book makes them valuable alone. Making them holy and perfect just destroys any possible purpose they could have.
I love the Bible as it is and the same for the Qur'an. Adding this divine nonsense to it just destroys its validity.
Look at the Qur'an and how additional texts are constantly added to it. They are added to it though through gimmicks and pseudo historical relevancy.
Why not just drop the act and allow trained ulema to compile more ahadiths.
