If the founder of your religion were brought back from the dead, and pointed to another religion contrary to your and said "The religion you follow at the moment based on my teachings is not what I taught, (insert other religion here) is identical identical to what I taught."--would you join that religion?

Ignore what religion came first, the locations of the religions, and so on for this discussion. This is if they were brought back today.

Some random examples of what I'm talking about:

Jesus appears, and says Buddhism is identical to his teachings, so his followers should follow that religion.
Muhammad says the same with Mormonism
Joseph Smith with Sikhism
The Sikh gurus with Judaism
Buddha with Ásatrú
Moses with Spiritism (I'm running out of ideas, hush. :D)

...and so on.

Would you drop your current religion and go to that one, or would you stay in the religion you are in at the moment, even though the founder/s pointed out another religion?

What would you do?

Hi Odion
I think I would consider what they have to say. Don't you think most people would be too doubtful to re-consider the teaching, despite their "facts", these significant people would be up against the same debates we see here? :)

If St. Peter would be brought up back from the dead and would say that there is another religion that hold the same teachings of Christ or is parallel to it, then I would definitely consider it.

To be truthful, I can't imagine what I would do until it actually happens. But I would study any religion in depth. I have already done that to a certain degree.

Jesus is my Lord. I would follow Him because He is the Truth.

I would give that religion some serious thought. I wouldn't promise any change but I would definitely think about it. One thing though... What if that person who woke up from the dead was actually the "Devil" in disguise, who is then trying to divert you away from your belief? What then? Would that change anyone's answer?

How would I know it was him????????
However would convince you it was him. You had complete evidence and trust in the message.

I'm not talking some "reincarnation" or "the next prophet/saviour" or anything, but that actual person. I wouldn't know the mechanics. :D

Would you change to that other religion, or still stay the same?

I voted "I would not even consider it," but that's not the whole story.

UU is rooted in liberal Christianity, but we embrace our evolution into something new. So, even if you could single out a founder, we don't really expect to align perfectly. Actually, last Sunday's sermon was partially about how different we are from our parent religions.

I would still be fascinated if some illustrious figure said "this is what I meant."

If it really was him, then yes by all means I would change my religion seeing that If I'm going to worship this God, I should do it right.

Jehovah our God is One
I would change to whatever religion Jesus confirmed as the true religion without hesitation because Jesus is the son of God and as he said, "no one comes to the Father except through me"

If i had to turn my life upside down to do that, then i would because the benefits far outweigh the sacrifice.

I guess if I follewed the teaching of someone and they came back and said that that was not what they were teaching, I would have to believe him. No one knows better than what he taught than himself. I don't know that I would follow the religion he pointed to but I would stop with the one he claimed was right. More than likely I would switch since he actually cam back from the dead though.

Unpacking it just gets weirder from there.

Ultimately, I don't believe in my religion because of a particular personality (Moses). I believe in it because of the religion and what it teaches.

That wouldn't change if Moses came back. I'd probably doubt he really came from the dead.

Done here.
I voted "I would not even consider it," because in my view Buddhism is about investigation and practice, not about accepting religious teachings on somebody else's authority -- even an authority as august as Gautama.

However, in this particular example you have suggested replacing Buddhism with Asatru, and I already have some attraction to Asatru, so I would consider broadening my practice.

For the people who are wondering how you'd really know it was the founder, I'd suggest imagining that someone went back in a time machine and brought this person back here...so there would be no question that it is Moses/Jesus/Buddha/etc.

And that probably is the sticking point. Someone claiming to be Jesus and espousing a different religious philosophy could simply be a masquerading spirit.
