What's good about where you live?

Let's see some boasting about your country or province or state. What about your home do you find good? What are you proud of? What are some things other people may not know?

I'll start. I live in Iowa in the US.

The Iowa landscape is full of rolling hills and trees. I know some people think it's all flat farm land, but it really isn't. It can be a very beautiful place.

It is more religiously tolerant here than most would probably think. A lot more Pagans here than most would think as well.

Same-sex marriage and Common-law marriage are both legal here.

Some famous names from Iowa: John Wayne, Buffalo Bill Cody, Mamie Eisenhower, Herbert Hoover, Ashton Kutcher, George Reeves (yes, we spawned Superman ;) )and Donna Reed. Along with the fictional character of Capt. James Tiberius Kirk. From my hometown of Ottumwa we have Tom Arnold and the fictional character Corporal "Radar" O'Reilly. There are many more I could list, but those are some highlights I thought most would recognize.

The "Gothic House" is here, the house which inspired this painting by Grant Wood, just a few miles to the east of me really.

So, do tell, what are some interesting things about where you live?

Let's see, what's good about North Alabama? The landscape is absolutely beautiful. Being at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains will do that. We have a kick-a** college football team. The fishing is great. Being part of Tornado Alley sucks, but you get used to it.

Mild climate. Beautiful countryside. No "traffic." Low crime rate. Good schools. Exceptionally friendly and gracious people.

It's absolutely beautiful here, whatever the weather. Takes my breath away just about every day. Sea, evergreen forest, mist, mountains, rivers, bears, sea lions, killer whales, eagles, deer...

You would have to be an idiot to go hungry here. Wild food is everywhere. Water is everywhere. The growing season is long for this country. People are generally laid back, friendly, unpretentious and eccentric. Permaculture is a well-established principle, and there are more entrepreneurs here than anywhere else in the country.

Anyway, I love it. :)

Plymouth Rock, Cape Cod, New Bedford (where I live) Whaling capitol of the world steeped in maritime history,The Whaling museum, the Seamens Bethel, Boston(except for Cambridge) the Museum of Science, the Orpheum Theatre, Blue Man Group, the Red Sox (Yankees Suck!), miles of coastline, stripers, blues, cod, Fall River ,Lizzie Borden, Battleship Cove (where the USS Massachuessetts is docked), Salem, the witch museum........

Wow! Alot I guess. Thanks Draka!!:)

Chinu wants to be the residence of city name "Begampura" told by saint RAVIDASS. :)

Begampura..... City of peace (Begumpura) known as being city of ecstasy. Distress of un-enlightenment exists not there. Searches, burden of taxes ownership of property have no place. The city is free from apprehension, accusation, compassion and fall. I love that land of His Kingdom, there is endless Bliss and Glory. Pause It is Eternal Kingdom There is no grading of citizens and all are equal. It is known for it's eternal fullness. There live only the Spiritual inhabitants. One may walk to his pleasure The entry to the Lord’s palace is unrestricted. Proclaims Ravidas I am redeemed Lord is my co-citizen and my friend in heaven.

North central New Mexico, USA?
Nice, four season climate, low humidity, not too hot, not too cold. Cost of living not too bad, nice and varied countryside -- desert, forests, mountains, river all nearby.

I quite like my home state. It's expensive and the politics can be stupid but I live close to the coast. A lot of water. The Chesapeake Bay, James River, York River, Atlantic Ocean...the waterways are amazing. The trees are amazing. The seasons are great.

I live in the suburbs. Everything is right here. Lots of shopping. Quite lively.

But within a half hour, I could be in Virginia Beach, at the ocean front. In twenty minutes, I could be in downtown Norfolk, at Waterside. Or I could go west to Williamsburg, and take in colonial history - which is a completely different feel to the southeastern portion of my state. I'm less than three hours from beautiful countryside and tucked here and there are rural pockets, close to where I reside. In the Northern Neck area, it's beautiful and quaint. And it takes less than three hours to get to D.C. from where I live.

I also enjoy the culture, here. People are from everywhere.

My wife and I actually took a one week driving vacation in Iowa and had a great time! We were surprised at how unpretentious the house is. (But I suppose the same could be said for Grant's dentist and sister.)

As for us, Chicagoland is remarkable: great sites, great cuisine, great theatre, great ...

The Washington, DC area has a higher percentage of douches than any other place in the country.

That's the best I can do.
