What's good about where you live?

Oh, man, I LOVE East Texas!

The people are terrific - independent and strong, but friendly and hardworking. The economy is doing well, all things considered. The food is absolutely the best - a glorious mix of Tex Mex, Cajun, "soul food," and southern cuisine. Actually, that mixture pretty much sums up the demographic mix here as well. We have a vibrant arts/music scene. The men are gallant, and the women are proudly feminine. We have a good mixture of large cities (Dallas/Fort Worth) and quaint little villages with charming town squares (Mineola, for example).

Politically, there are lots of independents and I really like that. At the same time, there is an unabashed and unapologetic appreciation for Family, God, and Country.

The weather is hot, hot, hot in the summer - and I love it. I've heard it takes some getting used to, but since I am southern born and bred, it has never bothered me. The winters are FANTASTIC - highs in the fifties generally, with plenty of frosty sunny mornings where the whole world seems to glitter. We get snow once or twice a year - 3 inches or so which absolutely paralyzes all schools and businesses - our excuse for getting out and trying to make a snowman before it all starts to melt around noon! I'll post some pictures which personify East Texas to me.

I'm not a native Texan - I'm a New Orleans native. But I am proud to embrace the state that has welcomed me so warmly.

Alicante (Spain) right on the Mediterranean, well actually 17km south of Alicante in a lovely place called Gran Alacant It's on a cliff overlooking the beautiful beach (Carabassi) I have another place about 7 KM further south and a place in the city.....You might tell I love this area. Very good during the winter we can decide where we want to live, but during the summer we rent two of the places to holiday makers, so less choice...

The Hebrides - mountains, beaches, the ocean, small population, abundant wildlife (whales, dolphins, otters, seals, deer, golden eagles), the northern lights in winter, spectacular sunsets in autumn....

Here are some of my pics of places within a few miles of my house:

And one fo the best things I love the most about the City is Septa. Public transportation which can get you anywhere in the city.

Cardinals baseball. The Arch. Imo's thin crust pizza. Toasted ravioli. Gooey butter cake.

Blues and jazz music. The local rap scene around U-City. The Loop. Washington Ave. The microbreweries (Schlafly's is really good....food, beer, farmers market, independent film festivals, etc).

Did I mention Cardinals baseball? It's like a religion around here. And Busch Stadium is literally Baseball Heaven. We love going there.

People are generally great, in spite of the fact that most of the population can't make up it's mind whether we're a small town or a budding metropolis. I like to think of St Louis, MO as a big-small town.

For instance, if you're asked, "where did you go to school?"...people 'round these parts mean where you went for high school. Not college. There's a strong allegiance to local communities in that regard. I like that.

Country: US.
I've never been outside of the US, so it's hard to compare. There's almost every climate, reasonable degrees of freedom, etc.

My particular area:
The good part is my job. I really like my job. Other than that, I don't like where I live. The beach is lame, polluted, and crowded. The forests are full (like REALLY bad) of ticks. I don't find much beauty here.

Although I live outside of my country at the moment, I like lots of things here. I have only been to two cities here though, so I can only speak of those.

The weather is mostly very stable, with nearly no rain except for half of the winter, there's little to no humidity, and almost no domestic insects like mosquitoes/fleas.

The people are generally very nice and friendly, easygoing, and helpful, especially in my area. I love my neighbors. :camp:

What I like the most though, is safety. I have seen shops that were out of daily shift left with their doors open, without even having security guards. It made me feel genuinely warm inside. :)

Now I gotta find some wood to knock on. :p
