Whats the point in life?

Ori

At the moment (and the last several years) I feel like life is pointless, there is nothing I can do about it.
:help: please.

Some might say we create our own purpose. I too, however, feel life is essentially pointless. Still damn good fun though.

hey, ori

that's a tough one. i believe, ori, that there are no universal answers to that question.

you feel like life is pointless. life is only as meaningful as we choose to see it. we are thinking, feeling creatures- we project what we feel onto things, relationships, and experiences. if you're feeling as though everything is pointless and unfulfilling, you will be faced with an existence that is pointless and unfulfilling.

it's up to you to find meaning in your life. no one-word answer to a general, abstract, impossibly objective question can do that for you.

we experience meaning through encountering something transcendednt, through encountering another person, and through facing down our own demons. these are all incredibly personal tasks, and so is the task of finding meaning and deciding that life is worth living.

that's what i belive, at least. yep, spiritual existentialist at heart. :rolleyes:

I liken the point of life like someone would use a pencil. Keep it sharpened, use it efficiently and with practice, create the most attractive universe you can.

simply to live....(IMHO)

to feel, to experience, to laugh, to cry, to love, to hate, to touch, to taste, to smell, to be joyful, to be sad, to question, to answer, to sleep, to breathe, to learn, to teach, to do everything in our power to simply be.....

Who cares what happens when we step off the roller coaster, it's the ride that is the fun part... (don't you just love cheesy analogies :))

Ecclesiastes might be a good Source:-

A Time for Everything1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

In other words, perhaps, to experience everything that there is to experience in God's world. As far as my interpretation of that is concerned, to learn to become as pure as possible, through reincarnation.:)

I think we all struggle with that question now and again. You seem a little depressed though. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry. If you ever want someone to type to...

Hmmm it is not nice to feel like that. I don't have an answer for you because I feel the same way you do but I can tell you that it gets better and you are able to live with it over time, at least it did for me. There is always the potential for a purpose for life to be out there, just because we don't know it does not mean it isn't.

I guess i'll just carry on as normal for now, see how things go.
Thanks everyone for the replies though.

whats the point in life? I say...what's the point in death?
At least when you're alive you can make a difference for the better, you can help those around you and enlighten yourself through verious modes of education.

When it's over, it's just over and for all we know there's nothing beyond this...

Yeah, exactly. What's the point in death. I have to tell myself that sometimes. Sometimes I get so mad at myself I wish I were dead. I get so embarrassed that I'm such a bad person. But then I really think about it, and u know I may as well do anything I want if I'm just going to be dead anyway. I always think that when I'm really really depressed, that if I want I can just go skydiving or hangliding and have some fun without worrying because then if I do die it wouldn't actually be suicide, but I know I'll never get around to it, but in an odd way it cheers me up.

K that sounded really pathetic. I'll go slink back to my corner now.

If you figure it out, let the rest of us know??

For those who asked what's the point of death - my physical death is the one thing in life I have to look forward to ;)

Not to over-react, but if you have been feeling like this to a great degree, you should consider professional help. We should enjoy life and live it to the full. Many of us are searching for something greater - we all will die - but we know for sure that there is only one life, and we should experience it in all its wonders.

I agree with Angellous. The chronic and persistent feeling that life is pointless can be a symptom of a psychiatric disorder that needs medical attention.

I don't believe its worthy of medical attention, I just get a little down sometimes, actually most of the time. It must be in my nature. I'm sure i'll still be here for a good while, don't worry.

Life is pointless? I don't think so. It's certainly difficult.

I think the emotional stuggles some of us face are not from life itself. I think they are from having to live in a human world. The struggles of life are things like coming to terms with death, making ends-meat, and staying healthy. These are difficult things but not the most difficult. The human world presents the largest struggles; for example, being happy. Survival is simple but how do you be happy? How do you find satisfaction? I think the key is to be honest with yourself. What do you like and don't like? Solve this first and, at the very least, you'll be working towards an end. Or shall we say a point.

From a purely evolutionary point of view: Make babies, and lots of them!!
Soooo.... I guess that means my life is pointless since I'll never make even one baby, much less many? :sarcastic
