Homeless mother who sent six-year-old son to better school in the wrong town jailed for five years

A mother who pleaded guilty to fraudulently enrolling her six-year-old son in the wrong school district has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Tonya McDowell sent her son to an elementary school in Norwalk, Connecticut, instead of her home city of Bridgeport.

The 34-year-old, who was homeless when she was charged with felony larceny last year, said she wanted the best education possible for the boy.

This story makes me sick. How on earth can they actually sentence a woman to prison for sending her kid to school? She isn't a criminal now but probably will be after 5 years of prison. And what about her kid? Is 5 years in the foster system supposed to turn him into a model citizen? What's he going to think of the society that would do this to him and his mother for the crime of sending him to school?

Great way to educate ones children. Commit fraud to get them placed in a better school. Freakin' brilliant, but then again, probably not an ethical issue for a drug dealing mom. No doubt, she was just selling drugs to provide him with a better home life. The mind reels....

$1 felony: Florida man charged over soda bill at McDonald's

The local manager told sheriff's deputies that Mark Abaire filled a courtesy cup with soda and walked out the building without paying. A McDonald's employee told him the cup was only for water. However, Abaire filled it with soda from the fountain machine and went to sit outside the restaurant.

The police report stated when the manager asked him to pay, Abaire declined, cursed at him and refused to leave the premises, the Naples News reported.

Collier County deputies later arrested Abaire who now faces felony charges, according to the same report.

Ok, this guy sounds like a real pain in the butt and most likely deserved to be arrested and charged with something. But a felony? Really?

Cops can use a laundry list of laws to grab you in trumped up charges. I once reported on a police officer for parking in front of a fire hydrant. They're not allowed to do that unless they were dispatched. Doubt he got anything more than a brief talking to. If it were a private citizen they'd probably he hauled off to jail and have their car impounded.

Well Duh!

Yeah, it's not like she isn't guilty of fraud and selling drugs.

Be that as it may, committing actual crimes to do that ain't exactly the sign of someone firing on all cylinders.

Heck, I wouldn't be against having her kid taken away and put in protective custody.

Depends on the drugs. If it was just pot then the whole thing is blown out of proportion. The article doesn't give enough information about the drug charges to make a decision on the woman's character. Would you sell some weed if it meant you could feed your child one more day?

Soo if all schools are free and equal what did she steal anyways? Of lemme guess can't have no ghetto kids going to a good school?

And leaving a kid in a bad school in a bad neighbor hood is a good idea?

I'm just curious as to how they determine what district a homeless person lives in.

They use the last known address filed with the state, such as what is on a drivers license or ID. If you have a utility bill with your name and address on it they will accept that as proof of residency but fine you for not having updated your license or ID.

What's the difference between a drug dealer and someone who brews alcohol at home other than some hokey legal distinction anyway?

Is someone a worse parent for selling drugs on the street when other families stock up liquor in their cabinets and have a fridge devoted entirely to beer?

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

Do you understand how property taxes work?
