Heretic and part-time (skinny) Santa impersonator
Before I retired I had the following on my cubicle wall which upon occasion exactly expressed the communication problem:
Quote:
“I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”

Alternatively:

[Vizzini has tried cutting the rope to kill the Man in Black, who now clings to a rock]
Vizzini: He didn't fall?! Inconceivable!
Inigo Montoya: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Inconceivable!

I feel that debating can be a egocentric game, if you debate about something, you have to be right on with its truth, if its not truth, don't debate, if you do then its nothing but wanting to be right when in fact your wrong. I myself don't like to debate, but I do like to have a conversation about whatever.

I've conceded before when presented with solid points. But typically I get bored after so many rounds of the same tactics brought in about things I'll debate about.
Agreed. I get slightly annoyed when I'm the first to state a particular point but someone else later on in the thread gets the credit.

Mostly, though, I'm just here to hook up with the sexy people.
This IS thread is where all the sexy people hang out in and you're the queen of schexxxy. ;)

3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 for me.
Most of the time I'm here for the laughs, with a dose of mental stimulation thrown in. Only mind I really expect to see evidence of change in is my own.
This is a multi-choice poll. There's still time to vote for the sloth!!

I'm kind if a jerk because the only time I enjoy debating is when I take a position to which I don't actually subscribe. For some reason this agitates people which gives me great satisfaction. Yes, technically I'm crazy.
I considered an option like this because I often think it would be fun to play the devil's advocate/jerk. I don't do it because I'm too lazy to debate, however.

My "debating" style is often confused by others as debate, when in fact on the scale it is light on debate and heavy on irony mixed with snarkey humor, and the reason for this is that I do not believe anyone is "right" but just different levels of "not wrong but mostly wrong" as far as "the bottom line" including fellow Hindus, almost all are generally wrong from "both sides" and for most things that folks think are serious enough to have a debate about, these are debates that are actually over things for which there is no answer, no solution, nor is there a utopia, complexity is much more broad than some can ever imagine, and you will always have the poor. Also too much of this debate is over exaggerated and I just laugh with irreverence. Oddly, pretty much everything that I predict comes true, I am hardly ever wrong in the end (so far) and "time is on my side". But that might be because I don't care while at the same my "debate" is just the most friendly prankster you might imagine, and my agenda has zero to do with "winning you over to my side". I am only interested in companionship that wants adventure, otherwise "catch me if you can". Why do people assume there is an "answer"?

So none of the choices match my "style", the most close perhaps is 7 because I do have a lot of fun. My "style" is "what time does the next magic carpet leave for Timbuktu, or is it Kathmandu?"
I see a lot of me in your answer. Us California types are kinda laid back, aren't we? ;) I prefer discussions over debate. I'm not interested in "winning" anything. I like to exchange ideas, information and have fun.

Would you quit picking on Kathryn?!! :smack:

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Cheers!

You are rude in a most appealing and attractive fashion.

Do these pajama pants make my butt look too big?

More importantly, do I care?
I know...it "Depends"

:)

Hey, I like that.

As for the pajama pants question...

"Bless your heart, they perfectly fit the image you are obviously trying to portray."

Ok, I know we nearly always disagree on everything, but I'll pile on this "welcome back Kathryn" heap of girls. You're much better at continually taking issue with all of my opinions than anybody else who has been filling in for you while you've been gone, since you occasionally consult facts and always consult reason.

Haha, back atcha, sister! It's good to be back and I always enjoy debating and discussing things with you, whether you stick to facts or not! ;) I do appreciate your eloquence and the thought you put into discussions and debates.

I think we probably agree on a lot of things - we just don't generally discuss those.

That shouldn't stop you from piling up with us girls - COME ON IN!

Please wait for the poll. :)

Discuss at your leisure. Or, not.

Multi-choice option.

People debate here? Huh, never noticed before. I see a lot of rhetoric, semantics, and cognitive bias hiding behind selective source quoting, but not much, if any, actual debate. Not that debate is a very useful activity anyway, since it's virtually impossible to change anyone's mind regarding anything.

I'm here to have fun, sharpen my wit, and perfect my argumentation and rhetoric - skills that are actually useful.

I agree. It's nearly impossible to have a cogent and consistent debate when there are so many people involved, all the opinions get muddled together and the OP is often thrown off topic many times. Debate is more efficient if you're having a one on one go at it,though. I haven't started one of those in years. Too much work. :p

You could have selected: Sloths are cute.

I mean, you'd have to be a cold hearted cretin to not think sloths are adorable.
