What's your set of commandments, suggestions of laws?

I have the 10 commandments....what do you have?

(This is to be discussion only, not debating why one is better then the other please)

I am also incorporating the 10 precepts of zen buddhism into my life.

What kind does your religion/faith/etc have, and what are they, and where could I find them? Thanks!

I guess I live by the philosophy of never stop questioning, never stop looking. We always have to test ourselves to see whether or not we truly match up with what we think is right.

Yes it would Meggie.

Thanks! Discworld fans can take out a checklist and see which ones I've 'borrowed' from Terry Pratchett. Actually, looking at the post as I've got it ready to submit now, I'm not sure if I'd call these meanderings laws so much as precepts, or goals. So here they are so far.

That which is put out into the universe will return to one, whether it is kindness or negativity.

Do not bow to any god that you would not respect if they were human.

Respect wisdom coming from others and other religions, and do not dismiss wisdom from within.

Power, used unwisely, can make cities crumble, people weep, and cause suffering. The greatest power, however, is that of gentleness, because it can make civilizations flourish, dry people's tears, and eliminate pain.

It is our duty to speak for those who don't have voices, whether it's animals, land or people.

Harming another, or oneself, is an unwise action.

Respect and fear are not the same thing. Fear can be overcome.

Open your eyes. Then open your eyes again.

Do you mean these?
  • I will refrain from killing.
  • I will refrain from stealing.
  • I will refrain from abusing sexuality.
  • I will refrain from speaking untruthfully.
  • I will refrain from encouraging delusion in myself and others.
  • I will refrain from malicious speech.
  • I will refrain from being proud of myself and belittling others.
  • I will refrain from holding back in giving either Dharma or wealth.
  • I will refrain from indulging in anger.
  • I will refrain from defaming the Three Treasures.

I don't have any set commandments or rules, but two of the best guidelines I've heard are these:
"The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge." (Bertrand Russell)

"But the Spider Grandmother did give two rules. To all men, not just Hopis. If you look at them, they cover everything. She said, 'Don't go around hurting each other,' and she said, 'Try to understand things.'" (Kendrick Fritz, quoted by William Least Heat Moon in Blue Highways)
I'm also working on incorporating the Quaker Testimonies into my life.

Out of curiousity, because that is why I am here, to learn, and having no knowledge to speak of for zen buddhism, what are the three treasures?

I think that this is one of the best things I've ever heard. How beautifully put!

The Buddha (that is, Siddhartha Gautama), the Dharma (generally, the teachings of Gautama and the Buddhist way of life), and the Sangha (the community, which can mean the community of Buddhist monastics, the community of the Buddha's disciples, or the community of the enlightened).

Also called the Three Refuges, and some Buddhists consider taking the Vow of Refuge to be the defining moment when one becomes a Buddhist, like baptism for most Christians. That vow is:
I take refuge in the Buddha.
I take refuge in the Dharma.
I take refuge in the Sangha.

As part of that, are you becoming a vegetarian? The reason I ask is, I'm trying to move gradually in that direction.

I actually was, I cannot be anymore for health reasons. It was one thing that was preventing me from having a healthy, fertile body.

I'd love to go back, but right now, it isn't physically possible. I may go back after I have children though.

Your health comes first. I'm moving slowly toward vegetarianism. I no longer cook meat, except for seafood, but I'll eat it if somebody else cooks and serves it. I'm just afraid John's going to get sick to death of fish and shellfish and refuse to eat it at all, which is what happened with Brussels sprouts. So I'm trying to change our diet so slowly he barely notices. ;)

Hehehe. I don't eat much red meat. I particularly stay with seafood and chicken. Every so often there will be red meat (maybe once a month), but that's just to get what I need from it.

Someday I might go back, but for the next 20+ years, it's carnivorous for me.
