Heretic and part-time (skinny) Santa impersonator
Heh. Thanks for stirring an old and nearly forgotten memory.jamaesi said:(This is when I really want a neuter pronoun )http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pansexual
Back in those "hip" days of the late '60's and early '70s (and the nascent rumbligs of more "politically correct" speak), my school floated the proposed use of "gender-neutral" pronouns as alternative to "he/she" (to be called "co"), and "his/hers or theirs" (to be called "cos"). This rather awkward "advance" of sociological nomenclature - needless to say - didn't get much traction either in or out of the classroom...and withered as quickly as other whimsical fads of the day.
It's not difficult to understand why, when you compare the two sentences:
Gender specified:
"Last year, John and Mary competed for election to senior class president. He campaigned that his platform would better accomodate seniors and their class' interests. She campainged that her platform would better serve the interests of all students. He won the election by a clear majority."
John wins! Woo-hoo!
Gender "neutral":
"Last year, John and Mary competed for election to senior class president. Co campaigned that cos platform would better accomodate seniors and cos class' interests. Co campainged that cos platform would better serve the interests of all students. Co won the election by a clear majority."
So who won the election?
Obviously...the "gender specific" luddites. ;-)
