When Did They Discover Christ Was God?

Matthew 16:15-17

King James Version (KJV)

15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Peter answered that he (Jesus) "...art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Peter did not say the Jesus was God.

Also in John6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

6:69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

Again Peter said that he was the Christ, the Son of the living God.

And he wasn't the only one....Nathanael agrees.

John 1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

They probably thought something was up when he was transfigured on the Mount of Olives. It would be hard not to recognize his statement "the Father and I are one" [John10:30] as being accurate at such a moment when the indwelling Logos** shined out in glory. The Apostles (Peter, James, and John) found their noetic/spiritual eye opened then and they could see the hidden reality.

** The Logos/Word that was with God and was God - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1
