When have you experienced shock the last time?

Last week I disturbed an intruder in my house at 5am in the morning. I screamed at him and he fled. He stole my money and my phone. I shook for hours afterwards. I cannot get the image of that tall hooded figure in the darkness out of my head. I think that is pretty shocking.

Well that is shocking JJD, more shocking than what I was thinking about for sure(edit: I was thinking about something where we aren't potentially in danger ourselves). *hugs* Did you report it to the police?

I was shocked today to hear about a guy who was an a-hole to me had killed himself. It turns out that his life was one big problem he couldn't solve. I felt sorry for him, but also think it might have been a release for him.

When I had to force myself to accept that I am probably never going to see the only man I ever fell in love with ever again. I still cry into my pillow over this. E-mail simply isn't the same.

Also when I found out my mom has Borderline Personality and that's why she's such a female dog.

Don't give up. My wife dumped me on prom night and married someone else, for God's sake. She and I now have a son and after a shaky period are fixing up our marriage. Everything is possible.

But none of that dude-on-dude stuff. That's just creepy and gross and strangely exhilarating.

Haha, he was my Philosophy Teacher, 20 years older than me, then forced out of his job by the a-hole principal who went on a staff purge. :(

I honestly can't say the last time I was shocked. It's pretty difficult to get a rise out of me.
I was almost run into by a car darting out onto the road I was on from a country driveway last week, but I can't really describe that as shock.

Same. The kind of shocks I experience don't last very long for me these days. I was curious if I'm becoming immune to it. With all the beheadings and stuff constantly on the news not much is shocking anymore.

Don't worry, you are young and will most likely find someone that's worth it.

Yes, I called the police right way. They were amazing. I had just bought the iPhone and now it was stolen! They asked if I had an iPad and when I said I did, they asked if I had the app "find my iPhone"? They downloaded it for me and located the phone. When he saw it was locked, the thief had ditched it in thick scrub near a creek not far from my home. We got it back! We put out the word on FB and people started coming forward with information. These thieves had been on a spree that night and someone had seen some lowlife's selling stuff out of the back of their station wagon. He took their registration number and the police nabbed the ringleader....caught with a house full of stolen good, drugs and money. He is now in jail. :)

A good outcome all around. But, apart from the money he stole from me, it cost me another $500 to upgrade the locks on my house, so it was an expensive wake up call. I live in a small coastal town and the drug problem is everywhere.
These creeps can get up early to steal, but not to get a job!

Interestingly, the police forensic lady who came later was talking about the fact that these punks couldn't care less about the psychological harm they cause to their victims. When I asked if the violent games that both kids and adults are playing on their XBoxes and Playstations are having a desensitising effect on their minds, she had to admit that this might well be a factor in people becoming "immune" to the feelings of others.

The military even train their members with video screens in simulated computer animations of real situations, so that when they target real human beings it doesn't feel real at all.

How many kids are playing these extremely violent games with their parent's consent because the victims are not real and they don't see the harm? There is the real danger of desensitisation, cultivating a love of violence. What you feed, grows! Can't we see it permeating all aspects of the entertainment industry? What are they feeding us? What effect is it having on the upcoming generation? How have our standards altered in the past 50 years? Where has people's sense of family and community gone? Is it for the better? Has it made the world a better place or are we sick of the drunken violence, foul language and loose morals that permeate today's world?

It isn't as harmless as most people think. Many have forsaken the standards of decency they once held, to run with the crowd.....not me. I am no part of this world, even though I must live in it and sometimes be a victim of it. (John 15:18-21) I refuse to adopt its thinking and actions. I know who is running this show. (1 John 5:19) :(

I honestly have a hard time thinking of an example of being emotionally shocked.

The closest I can think of, which others have listed as well, are certain automotive scenarios where someone nearly causes an accident with me and my heart rate spikes briefly from it.
