Where do you get your ebooks from?

I received a KoboGlo HD for my birthday
464877-kobo-glo-hd.jpg

and was curious where people download their ebooks from. I've been to several sites so far, but... that was a bit of a time waster. I saw many things I had no interest in reading and only snagged a couple of minor titles.

Oh, btw, I'm a tight-wad and am looking for the free stuff. Any ideas?

My main reading interest areas are (in no particular order):

Science and technology
Politics
Autobiographies/Biographies
History
Religion

far down the list is...
Fiction... (I get enough of fiction reading political commentary).

Thanks in advance.

I feel obliged to remind people about Rule 6, because if we see people posting to "free" books that are under copyright (aka, piracy sites), we're going to have to take it down:

6. Illegal Activities
Advocating or discussing personal engagement in illegal activities or criminal organizations (such as hate groups or terrorist groups) is prohibited in all areas of RF. Illegal activities are defined based on United States law, and include but are not limited to: drug use, theft, piracy, vandalism, and all violent crimes. Voicing opposition to illegal activities and criminal organizations, or debating changes to current criminal law, may be acceptable at the discretion of the RF staff.

There is obviously Amazon's online store.

You may get Caliber (a marvelous free piece of software) and convert any unprotected ePubs you might have to the Mobi or AZW formats for reading on the Kindle, as well.

Amazon does its best to convert any HTML or RTF texts you send to the @free.kindle.com associated with your Kindle to a readable format, as well. It usually has very good results. You may also send PDFs, but PDF is a very poor choice of format for ebooks.

Thanks for bringing that up, Quinty. I have no desire for illicit titles.

You can get all sorts of copywrite-free books (classics) in e-pub and mobi format from Project Gutenberg.
https://www.gutenberg.org/
I've already trotted though Project GlutenFree, err, Gutenberg and found a few interesting things.

Great tips, Luis. Downloading Win64 version now. Thanks.

One thing I would recommend is your public library. Many of them have subscriptions to eBook services, which you can get for free (well, you check them out like any other book from the library) if you are a patron.
DOH. That is so obvious now that you mention it, LOL. *Runs off to local library site*

I was going to mention the library, but I see it has already been posted. No matter, I will stubbornly repeat what others say! :)

This ebook thing might not be such a bad idea.
How well do they work reading in the dark while lounging in bed or a green leather chair?
Or in the back of a pickup truck?

They have their own light. :) Although sometimes the auto-tilt-correct function (or whatever you call it) can be annoying, especially if you like to read laying on your side. It's like having the page of a book randomly rotate 90 degrees when you don't want it to. It would be really neat if they would come up with a way to load a reading glasses program correction it!

You may try Internet Archive. It's completely legal and, even more important, it is safe. There are books there, movies, music and also archived old versions of internet pages. You can download books in your preferred format, either as pdf, zip, text or other file. You can also read online, without downloading anything.

You can disable the auto-screen rotation.

You can get a free religious e-book here - http://intelligenceofreincarnation.com/ - the book is about Reincarnation. it is not a run-of-the-mill book - the view is very different from what is popularly taught
