Ahhh...consciousness...that part of one that controls everything,
and really decides nothing about the cognizance that it controls.

IMO it ceases to exist. It's created by the mind - which I see as the central nervous system and the information as it flows through it.

Basically when you sleep perceptive information travels a direct route to the part of the brain that deals with it, like the sound of someone opening a door.

When you are awake, this information travels to practically every part of your brain. A sound makes connections to sight which could provide a image of a door opening along with the sound or other memories which gets packaged up as a whole experience for the brain to perceive.

It's like all 5 senses, memories and imagination gets presented for the brain to be aware of. This creates an experience for the brain. We are aware of the "experience". When we sleep, this totality of experience does not happen. There is only direct information flow when we sleep not the totality of input from all parts of the brain that gets triggered in addition to the actual external information perceived.

Consciousness is surely a process, not a substance. Your question is like asking where fire goes when the fuel runs out.

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
I always thought the unconscious mind is the sum total of everything you have learned, and experienced, and been affected by. The mind is you trying to sort through everything life throws at you and find solutions, or reflect.

When i dream i am always creating narratives to my dreams. Occurences of random thoughts enter in, and leave and my mind seems to want sense in all this.

Consciousness is a process that takes the conscious daily involvement and merges it with the cogniznant memories and the daily happenings after we fall asleep, or become unconsious. Consciousness is always present and performing all mental needs when one is conscious. Cognition is what controls the whole ball of everything.
The core of the mind so to speak.
I think !! Therefore I am.
