Where To Start?

Glad I asked before buying, then. Which of these would you recommend? (Sorry for giving you homework!)

Ramesh Menon is a good writer.I have never read his translation of the THE MAHABHARATA but other of his books I Love. Many translations are very hard to read. His Devi Bhagavatam is great. He is both interesting and accurate (as you can be in a shorted version). The long version About 1.8 million words is way to long for most people to read.

I think reading the epics would be a great start and then you may get some direction from there. The Ramayan and Mahabharat are great stories and give a real feel for the fabric of Hinduism.

Hinduism is so vast that you can't start anywhere. It is better to get a general idea about various schools of thought like advaita, dvaita etc. , and then choose scriptures accordingly. For instance, if a monistic idea appeals to you, it'd be pointless to study about gods, their activities etc.; it'd be much better as a monist to study philosophical texts like Upanishads.

Namaste

Contrary to the beliefs of some, most monists, and monistic philosophies within Hinduism, do not reject gods, god or devotion.

That said, I agree with the essence of Chisti's post - find out what interests you, read accordingly.

Yes, it is old, but to me it was absolutely incredible.

Most probably because I am a religious geek though :D

You´d still need a lot others to understand too... bah! who am I kidding! I just wnat you to look at it because it is awesome :D . But it made me gain a lot more interest and you do would LEARN a lot about the myths at least in here :D .

Mahabharat is a great stuff :D
