Twenty years ago I was at the end of my first semester in the doctoral program, finally having settled in and understanding what I was doing there...two years after I'd married my love of several lifetimes, and almost a year from when I was laid off by the state...

I had one of these in 2004. IMO its was the best phone I ever had for having a signal.

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I went swimming with one of mine... Left it in my bra and forgot it was there.
Oh, I didn't do anything nearly as exciting as all that. I just left it in the pocket of my robe and forgot about it till the wash was nearly done. Ugh.

Twenty years ago? Let's see, I was 63, so what was happening?

I was planning on an early retirement, and had over paid the mortgage, so it would have been paid off or nearly so. I did retire at around 64 1/2. That proved to be the final nail in the coffin of my marriage, which broke up maybe 18 months later.

I had lost a beloved dog (Lady) to heart failure, and replaced her with Willow, a wonderful labradoodle whom I took with me into my single life. She lived a long life and was my constant companion. I still miss her. I now have Sheba a pure bred poodle, and the sweetest dog ever.

Interesting how my life memories tend to revolve around dogs. From the left, Willow, Flash and Sophie, around that time.

Yes, flexi is a very appealing aspect to a job.
I've had a few jobs where I could bank time-owed if I worked early or late but I had a time to be at the desk and a time to finish. My current role allows me to work whenever I like, essentially. Also, I don't need to go into the office ever unless I want to. Going back to standard working conditions would feel like prison now.

I was living on a little impromptu commune in San Luis Obispo California and supporting myself by collecting aluminum cans.

It was also the year I started hanging out on internet forums and the year that Naykidape was born.

It was one of the best years of my life.

I've just realised I was posting on RF 20 years ago in July.

I've never been much of a social media user - had a twitter account for about 6 months once and scroll through the Reddit landing page (r/all maybe) for a bit most days. The weird mix of interesting and informed people here plus the total jokers, fruitbats, the mentally ill and right wing psychos (you used to see a lot more of those) is like crack to me.

Not that I've tried crack. I've heard it is very moreish and easy to come back to is all.
