Which of these people more backwards?

The Amish people who ride horses and live without electricity or the people who shop in the market and play video games at home?

As Rival said, neither. But perhaps those who refuse to accept new knowledge that tends to trump old knowledge could be said to be so, :baby: :dancers: :oldman:

Amish is backwards, because they reject technology. Buying items isn't backwards. Neither is playing at home. Neither activity tells much about a person.

I think it is the thought that counts. That is, are they doing so out of some misguided belief or are they doing so because they suspect what such things bring?

Lots of Amish people have started using electricity and various forms of technology, and have for a few years now. But is it even fair or accurate to call the ones who still don't backwards? Growing up, to me that was religious extremism.
And those staying home playing video games, do they have social difficulties or are they jerks demeaning everyone who is better at the game than they are?

Your question reminded me of this cartoon:

Why would one be more backwards because of a way of life?

Which has a better quality of life is a better question.

Backwards relative to what? Your personal worldview or idea of how people should live?

And, of course, for all we know the one sitting at home playing video games may be impaired to the point that playing video games is the most practical means for this person to stay busy and socialize.

This. You have to separate the idea of "backward" as an insult from the mere meaning of the word, which entails a rejection of modern ideas, norms and culture. The Amish are "backward," but there's nothing inherently wrong with that as a lifestyle choice.

According to today's standards, the Amish would be backwards. There are two sets of Amish when I visited Penn. years ago. One was modern. They wore colors and they can go out of town without being shunned. Then you have the plain Amish; those we think of when we think of the Amish.

Backwards sounds like a negative word for many. Maybe less modern. Definitely not primative.

Your cartoon reminded me of a joke. A man had won a multi-million dollar lottery, and just a few years later, was broke again. When asked about it, he explained that most of the money went to fast women and slow horses.

"And the rest?"

"The rest? The rest was wasted."

The Amish are not backward. They are a little challenged when naming children. Names like Hezekiah, Jedediah, Zekeriah, Nimrod, Dorcas, etc.. pretty much guarantee a tough life, especially the Abe Lincoln beard-without-a-moustache look

But this doesn't make them backward. They have some of the best horror movies:

Barnraiser
Rosemary's Buggy
Natural Barn Killers
The Hand That Churns the Butter
The Shunning
The Pennsylvania Handsaw Massacre
Invasion of the Bonnet Snatchers
Silence of the Women Folk
I Quilt On Your Grave

They have great music, too.
