pejoritive (i had to look it up) critical or insulting connotation, well thats definately a better word than pun, there being called lots of things because they see underlying racism in just about everything, political correctness is running out of control here.
i dont think the adverts would get shown here

I have a question, and you don't need to answer it if you don't want to- what race are you?

I am mixed race but I look white. I never noticed a lot of racism, sure I got picked on by people who know what I am but walking down the street people treat me fine unless I wear hijab, until I started dating my SO (who is completely nonwhite and has very dark skin). It's just terrible how people treat him and in turn treat me for being a "race-traitour."

For example, I had to drop off a project at my school after school hours and he came in with me along with a white friend to talk to the teacher and give him the project. As soon as we walked in the door one of the office workers immediately grabbed my SO and told him he could not go anywhere in the school and would have to wait in the office until I (and the white friend who doesnt go to the school) were done. Interesting they only grabbed my SO, but I must just be imagining racism!

I've also been horrifed when people who know me see us together and then privately ask me who that "n***** I am with is, especially when I don't think they're like that. (And especially as he's not black, but Arab- not that that makes a difference, but at least they could get the right slur. Remedial Racism, anyone?)

It really drives me crazy when people who aren't a minourity tell me racism doesn't exist- it does. After being called a n****** and other pejoratives and being treated differently because of their skin and background, looking at an ad like this is sort of a slap in the face to minourities.

well i am of the human race, but my kinship and ancestry is english, and i am not so nieve to think racism doesnt ,exist of course it does, and it is non racial everyone is capable of racism to everyone else, i am sorry you have come across it i too have come across it , but i dont see it everywhere because it isnt everywhere, i think racism is just ignorance ,lack of personal education of other cultures , i think your last few posts were building up to your question, what is my race , does it matter, my comments on the adverts are that they wouldnt be shown here because the political correctness adherents would not let them for fear of offending black people. i am on RF to learn about other religions especially Islam as i dont want to stereotype. if you have the impression i am speaking from a racist point of view your are mistaken.

I don't think you are speaking from a racist point of view, no. I am just saying you might not notice or be exposed to it unless you are of the race being targeted.

I think everyone is of the human race- but we are still all different and shouldn't ignore the differences, if we were all the same how boring would that be. I don't understand the idea of people getting along with people in spite of their differences, but getting along because of their differences.

With those differences come different viewpoints and backgrounds and cultures and different ways of seeing things- I've been confused at why someone was offended at something that didn't really effect me. (For example, Oriental in refering to Asian people, I never understood why that would be taken as offensive when it wasn't meant that way until someone explained that it was seen as patronising and like the word Negro in reference to black people.)

I am very glad you are here to learn, I am here for the same reasons and have learned so much. :)
my comments on the adverts are that they wouldnt be shown here because the political correctness adherents would not let them for fear of offending black people.

This in particular- perhaps there is a reason they would be offended by them and what's wrong with being sensitive to that?

I don't really see PC as politicaly correct anymore, I see it as polite and courteous. A lot of people mock PC and mistake it for being a set of euphemisms and ignore the idenity politics of those who are still struggling for rights (women, minourities, GLBTQP, the disabled) and the fact what you call something does effect how you feel about it.

That One Guy
Everyone in this thread needs to see Crash. The best film I have ever seen about racism. It won an Oscar for Best Picture.

o_O Some white people are very pale with light hair just as some black people have very dark skin. I wouldn't call photoshop, I'd just say the lighting of the shoot has a lot to do with it and that they're close enough to their actual skin colour.

They look like chess pieces and both clearly have either heavy make up or heavy photoshop to get that kind of effect. You can tell by the exaggeration of the colour in the lips and the colour drain effect everywhere else.

Because Sony doesn't already have a history of controversial ads?
That is true. But I feel that for something to be racist, it has to be intended in such a way. All occurances of "black" and "asian" were censored from our year book at school regardless of their context because they are "racist terms". For me, this is a poor or useless definition of the word and a way of solving the problem is to require intent.

There's only one picture on the billboard.

And thats only one billboard. The reason that people have a problem with this billboard is that it shows the white person in a dominant position. Move over to the other images which do not show this but show the black person in a dominant position and nobody is calling racism.

Some Kind of Strange
When comparing the two PSP colors to race, I don't see how it could be racist at all. Saying that white is better than black would be like trying to out-compete themselves. Why would they intend to say that black isn't as good as white when it is in fact still their own product? To me, they're not saying one is better than the other, so even if it is some kind of racial metaphor it still isn't implying anything racist.
