This is an interesting topic. 'Normal' is typical, and 'abnormal' is rare. When you factor in how familiarity is always preferred to change you see how cultures tend to pressure towards conformity. That being said, the cultural roots of what becomes normal can be anything from the classroom to a blockbuster Hollywood movie. Sometimes our conformity to things that are dysfunctional create systemic issues in society. It is a terribly complicated subject.
What is considered 'normal' also affects an individual's worldview and sense of identity. Creating a lens of perception that is culturally crafted. That is why Americans will lean together on many issues- it is a part of our identity, our worldview, and essentially shifts perception in a predictable direction. When people are far off from the norm we call them unAmerican or crazy.
Degrees of normalcy can be applied to everything.

Normal is not just a concept, it is an expectation that forces a concept onto people outside of that "normal". "Normal" is often the CAUSE of "abnormal".

Normal is a concept that normal people use to feel superior to the abnormal, and the abnormal use to feel superior to the normal.

I agree, normal is what works within a society, if we go against the society, we are seen as being not normal, not playing the game.

shall we take this into the work environment?
where I work I see nothing average....nothing at all.
and the corporate battle cry for diversity doesn't help.
I see no standard one person to another.
and the turn over of hired help is continual.
I am greatly concerned the longevity of the employment I have.
I don't want to be looking for work, now that I'm over sixty.
The lack of 'normal' will likely run the production numbers into the ground
even as the demand for product is going up.
This is a recipe for disaster.
If you can't do the 99% delivery rate as promised.......
you won't be in business much longer.
