I hope you don't get so used to it's just your familiar look.
It's always easier said than done, but you need rest and sleep. It not effects what you do, it's a drag on the mood and pretty bad for our overall health and functioning.
Of course it could be medical or something else, but I'm surprised you haven't split in two as a necessity to keep up with everything.

Sometimes I get startled when someone tells me I look tired, because I don't even feel tired when they mention it... perhaps its sinking into the way I carry myself.

I've become a stickler for getting my sleep, though I sometimes get criticized for it. Some of that is the unconventional hours I keep, others I think is just the culture. "Why should she sleep when she could be getting up earlier and getting more done?"

I think my tests came back okay at my last check up. A little low on potassium they said, and overweight, but no major red flags.

I just don't get everything done. Don't like my unmopped floor or the extra dishes in the sink? Do 'em yourself. (Though people get critical towards that, too, but they can kiss my hindquarters.) But I sure do get pooped trying to get what I do get done...

Do you not look in the mirror often? We change a lot even day to day (different levels of puffiness to skin, different levels of hydration, different skin tones, different lighting levels if using natural light). If you don't see yourself often or pay attention, then these subtle differences can seem like they add up to something more dramatic maybe. Just a guess.

I notice that some of my own avatars look like completely different people sheerly because of factors like the lighting and angle (discounting some of the older pics I've used, I mean just all the recent ones: I could snap a new one right now and it can look very different based on a lot of factors).

Same is true for our actual faces in real life.

I have noticed that in the last few years, the person I see in the mirror is unfamiliar.

This doesn't cause me grief or upset, its just curious to note. I'm not sure why this is so...

Anyone else go through this? Is it an aging thing? Or is it just another oddity on my end?
Is normal, not odd. Seeing it the other way would be odd, as you are not the body:D

Could be cognitive dissonance, or some other symptom of depression and/or anxiety?
Could be Spiritual awakening or awareness, that you are not the body, but the witness. Could be God's Grace too

My appearance did change significantly in a short amount of time, and I've always felt the inside and outside didn't match, but anytime I see that person staring back out of the mirror at me, it kind of startles me.

Did you get vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine? :)

No, I don't. I can actually go days without looking in a mirror. If I don't go anywhere(other than perhaps the yard/neighborhood walk, I stay in my 'house clothes', and I don't worry about hair/makeup. If I leave, I do make myself generally presentable, but that can be some time in between(especially in the winter months).

I think that's why it doesn't upset me to any great degree. This is just another 'costume', and I'll take it off eventually.

Its good to hear its not too odd. :)

I think it's likely then that the little changes I was talking about could be making the difference. I have a mirror on the back of my bedroom door so I see myself anytime I leave in the morning, even if I'm just in pajamas. Also a mirror where I brush my teeth. I can notice small changes due to differences in hydration and things like that, but they're very small because I have a comparison to just the previous day. If you only see once in a while you are seeing your face somewhere random in these kinds of cycles so it might look different from the last time you saw it.

I think that's very intuitive. Even when I was using a mirror at more conventional intervals, I don't think I'd have ever noticed a visible difference in hydration levels.

I do a lot of exercise, barre, yoga, jogging. Some days I sweat a lot. Then I drink on weekends. I'm not always the best at rehydrating as much as I should, so my hydration levels swing. I dunno. It's still the case that our skin changes on a day to day basis, sometimes there's puffiness, sometimes there's not, etc.

I'm awful at rehydration...

"You should drink more water" I'm told. "Water's for toilets" is my reply... (I can't resist toilet humor.)

I am going through this, but it's probably because I grew a beard, haven't cut my hair since December, and finally worked up the courage to try contacts again.

@Meow Mix makes a great point. I think not paying attention to detail when looking in a mirror or not looking in a mirror at all for a period of time and do this.

An example of this is not seeing a friend or family members child for a year or more. When you see that child again, you notice radical changes in growth and features, whereas with your own kids, you don't recognize such a significant change over the same period of time, but the friend or family member does.

I got used to checking out my face when I had bad acne as a teen, it just became a habit. Haven’t had bad acne since, but I still look at my face while I brush my teeth. Then I wear makeup most weekends because I go out every weekend.

I think it is the frog boiling phenomenon, where the frog doesn’t notice the temperature changing because it’s gradual. So I notice that my skin does fluctuate based on things like sleep, hydration, stress, etc. Someone that doesn’t notice this in a small way over time is going to notice it in a bigger way when they do check.

So true...

As I look in the mirror and ask myself "who is that?" or when I run and ask "why isn't my body running as fast as my mind says it should and did?"-- a realization that my spirit is eternally young is revealed.

Yeah, that's a good point. Even when I do look in the mirror, its typically brief, because I'm being rushed.

Honestly, I'm just impressed the body keeps running.

I think it's pretty normal, particularly as you get older.
