Why Are So Many Cops Dumb?

Are you asking this for the purpose of defending dumb & corrupt cops?
No. Why don't you just answer my question? If your answer is no, for some reason, kindly provide what you consider to be an example of a "good" police officer.

Why don't you just answer my question?
It seemed a rhetorical question.
You already know that I'm too old (70).
So knowing at least one answer to your question already,
it struck me as a comment...not a real question. So I asked.

Because....
1) Boring work with no outlet for creativity.
2) They don't build anything.
3) I loathe government employment.
4) I'm retired & too old to start a new career.

If your answer is no, for some reason, kindly provide what you consider to be an example of a "good" police officer.
I even started a thread about good cops.
It didn't get much attention.
A good cop would....
- Strive to be a respected professional.
- Know the law & the Constitution.
- Intend to serve the public & justice.
- Be emotionally mature, & maintain equanimity during vexing situations.
- Be honest, kind, trustworthy, dedicated, educated, & intelligent.
- Not be racist, sexist, ageist, bigoted, cruel, thieving, etc, etc.
- Not view civilians as frightening, or as the enemy.

I recall the IQ issue from a while ago, but recently ran across this article....
Excerpted....

Jordan sued for discrimination but to no avail. Here's what a federal court ruled:

Too smart for police work, "Jordan has worked as a prison guard since he took the test."

@Wu Wei might find it fascinating that even a lowly engineer
would be rejected as too smart to be a cop. An interesting
aspect of the average 104 IQ claim is that this means that
nearly half of cops are below average (100 IQ).
So we're giving a couple hundred thousand below average
intelligence people a gun & a license to kill to civilians.
And this after training that's less than what's required
to be a mechanic, real estate agent, or cosmetologist.
Ref....
Have you ever seen lawyer rebuild an engine? I've seen mechanics wiz through the process, some of whom have difficulty reading. The point is experience and repetition (training) creates a very skilled person. I'm sure the average police officer could stand well enough with a lawyer, also, so the IQ thing may be a bit misleading. When someone knows their job and function of a position, they often enough become very capable according to those specifics.

Mechanical even to the point of surgical in some cases.

Regarding the law, cops are notoriously ignorant of it.
They receive very little training in it. And few ever
pursue knowledge of it on their own.
Check the youtube channel (We The People) of the
ex-cop in my last video.

Many people believe they know their job.
All they really know is how to do what they've
long been doing....be it right or wrong.

I don't dwell on "IQ". Instead, intelligence
is what matters. IQ would be just one factor.
Others are being thoughtful, presence of mind,
education, not letting emotion override one's
intelligence.

I was checking out public sector fields federally here in Canada for insurance reasons.
Only options for uneducated people were military, navy, cops or some special options for native collaborators with the former.

I reckon for a lot of people who don't have other prospects being a cop is just a safe way where they can get employment with some kind of valor without the discipline of the forces.

You'd think that people given a gun & a license
to kill would have to meet a higher standard than
hair dressers. Apparently not.
