I am hopelessly addicted.

I suspect most others here are too.

We don't yet understand internet addiction very well.

I suspect that for many of us, when we die, we will have a vision of the gates of paradise which will have a log-in screen requesting our username and password.

I'd say my reasons in order of decreasing significance are:

a) I have too much time on my hands.
b) I want to practice my arguing.
c) I am fascinated by other people's opinions and how they construct them.
d) I like you. Most of you, anyway.
d) Sunstone promised me a beer.

I rather dislike the endless debates and useless discussions too, but I've somewhat reconciled myself to them on the grounds that they reveal much about human nature I would otherwise be inclined to whitewash.

Absolutely. But I used to be very active in other places discussing and debating and I just got tired of it. Now I'm just trying to find a bit more productive and self-centered (me, me, me) interaction. So for the first time, when I don't like a person here, I just put them on ignore. I just don't care as much anymore. If I find people I can agree with and learn something from, then that's okay (like you right now :)).

It all depends on what we're ultimately looking for. I've learned that there are more things to life and understanding than just reason, logic, arguments, etc. Sometimes we can learn from each other just by talking about things, even without coming to any agreement at the end. When the dialogue turns sour, the whole dough will turn sour.

Why are you here at ReligiousForums?

To challenge what I believe by allowing it to stand up to the scrutiny of people who consider the same things that I like to consider. Thus, solidifying and/or modifying the belief structure to come into line with the most sensible beliefs I can manage.

Oh and also because I find this practice and this place to be wildly entertaining and perfectly suited to exactly what I'm looking for.

Some of say we are here to learn from others.

Check. The idea is to hear the arguments from as many angles as possible and thereby pick the most sensible option to believe in. I've learned a ton in the time I've been posting here and it has everything to do with all of you wonderful folks. Especially those I argue with.

Some are here to hear of other's testimonies.

I suppose I don't look for this so often. I'm interested in discussing topics of a religious nature. If what you have faith in comes into play when deciding what you believe about a particular topic, by all means say so.

Are you here to find yourself? To find whether your faith dweller or a person of "reason"?

Well, I think I am more here to promote the idea that these two things can coexist and do quite frequently and without issue. It's not necessary to discard one for the other.

Are you here to teach others of your faith?

No, if I teach anything its my philosophy as opposed to my faith. I don't typically set out to even allow my faith into the argument unless it is relevant to the topic.

Or are you here to teach others of what you call their "faith"?

No, I'm not really concerned with telling people what their faith is. They know and can tell me and we can work with that.

Maybe you are here to test your own faith?

Probably a lot to do with it, yeah. If a belief I hold can weather the storm of internet scrutiny, I think I can call that valid at least for my intents and purposes.

I am interested to here what brings people here.

Threads like this, of course!

People are unique in that we have language. People who come to forum are interested in things that most people are not interested in. There is no one in my life that likes religion and philosophy. I would be alone if I did not have you all. Thank You!

Curiosity of other peoples views. And this is a forum where people can have fundamentally different opinions about something without going at each others throats, well sometimes they do but those get banned. So all in all this is a very civilized forum, if it's members represented a cross section of the worlds leaders, no one would bother with wars to settle conflicts.

I'm here because its nice to clear an hour of my evening, to kick back on my couch with a cup of coffee and my laptop and have an interesting discussion.
I generally enjoy topics like religion, history, politics, anthropology and science. Personally I don't understand people who join in order prove to others their religious or political truth, although if I engage in a debate I will stand by my POV. For me, it's nice to have a chance to relax and discuss world religion with people from around the world, get a sense of different perspectives, or talk with like minded people.

It would be nice if more members would simply appreciate the chance for an on line multicultural discussion, instead of using the internet as a propaganda machine in the naive thought that they are getting other people on their crusade. For the most part, I found RF to be one of the best forums in this regard, with many like minded and laid back people you can reason with and also have a comic relief after a debate.

In addition, there are also longstanding members who are well educated in various fields, and its a good platform to talk to them. I think we have Biblical scholars, Classicists, archaeologists, biologists and other members who pursuit their interests a bit more seriously. I think that even as a secular Israeli, its a good chance for me to give those members who are interested a good background about Judaism, about the Hebrew Bible, and about Jewish history.
Likewise, I like the fact that I can discuss less mainstream religious and philosophical lines of thought, including the Temple of Set, and people who are sentimental about Paganism.

I'm here right now cuz I can't sleep.
I suppose I could do something productive instead, but the wee hours of the morning make me lazy.

I think religion is amazing, and came here to discuss various faiths and find out more.

It's an important part of the world... whether you believe in God or not. I want to be able to look deeper into my faith and have a better understanding of how religion impacts the world.

One thing I can say for myself, is I like to hear other's perspectives.
It intrigues me when someone tells me they dont believe in evolution because I to once didn't believe. But that was until I realized I didn't fully understand it.

So now I am here seeking out a person who truly understands it, yet still relies on faith.
I haven't found someone like that yet, but I am excited to meet alot of different people here.
It has already been an exciting experience.

I am here mostly to learn, but also, when it's appropriate, to offer my perspective on God, religion and faith.

Unfortunately, because of my job (I travel at times, and some weeks I am on-call 24x7) I tend to drop in and out of the forum and my postings may sometimes appear random. I can't always followup on responses as often as I would like.

Also, I have posted in other religious forums, but the participants here are generally more tolerant and respectful than on other forums. I appreciate that.

I came here originally so I could learn more about faiths other than my own by those who actually follow the faith- you can only learn so much from books and an encyclopedia. It turned out that more people want to actually question other people's faiths rather than learn about the various faiths. I don't care about people question my faith as long as they refrain from attacks. My faith is challenged daily by various things and even by me- I don't really need people to do it- but if it happens, I just go with it.

***Mod Post***

Some posts have been deleted from this thread, and the thread has been reopened for posting.

Please keep all forum rules in mind while posting, especially Rule 3 and Rule 8:

3. Trolling and Bullying
We recognize three areas of unacceptable trolling:
1)Posts that are deliberately inflammatory in order to provoke a vehement response from other users. This includes both verbal statements and images. Images that are likely to cause offense based on religious objections (e.g. depictions of Muhammad or Baha'u'llah) or the sensitive nature of what is depicted (e.g. graphic photos of violence) should be put in appropriately-labeled spoiler tags so that the viewer has freedom to view the image or not. Such images are still subject to normal forum rules and may be moderated depending on their contents.
2)Posts that target a person or group by following them around the forums to attack them. This is Bullying. Deliberately altering the words of another member by intentionally changing the meaning when you use the quote feature is considered a form of bullying. The ONLY acceptable alteration of a quotation from another member is to remove portions that are not relevant or to alter formatting for emphasis.
3)Posts that are adjudged to fit the following profile: "While questioning and challenging other beliefs is appropriate in the debates forums, blatant misrepresentation or harassment of other beliefs will not be tolerated."
8. Preaching/Proselytizing
The forums are not to be used for converting others to your own faith, against any faith, or recruiting people to join one's party, institution, or cause. This includes placing links or copied material from elsewhere intended for this purpose. Posts of this nature will be edited or removed and are subject to moderation.

My aim is to learn from the people here. I was very interested in the Christianity, but ever since I started reading here, to hear many sides, I think I'm not really as interested interested in the religion aspects, but more interested in is Jesus Christ's moral and ethical system as he taught, in a philosophical manner.

Another reason is that because there are other forums, cultural and political philosophy, I can exchange views with persons around the world...
