Perhaps because we keep the sacred and mundane separate. Dhoti does not work well in colder climes. Even the Gandhara/Mathura people wore pants. :D

I wear it Vrindavan style, with the pleated drape in the front, so when a breeze blows from my right, I get that Marilyn Monroe effect. I think I need one of those pouches Scotsmen wear with their kilts to keep them down. :D

I will know I've "arrived" at full confidence when I wear a dhoti to work at Diwali... half our employees are Indian. Though I've yet to see any of the men wearing traditional dress on Diwali, the women wear saris or salwar kameez.

I've never ever thought that clothing had much to do with it. I use loose fitting clothing that coincidentally happens to be Hindu style like I use incense, or pictures or sounds. It helps put one in a spiritual mood. It's a small thing in the grand scheme that helps, and certainly doesn't hinder, like tight clothing would.

You've been at it longer than I have. ;) Btw, I hate tight clothing too.

There was a trial by fire time when I was the pandaram priest. I think I only had one plain white veshti. The community just said, "If you do this, you have to dress properly," but they kept giving me more though. Now I have too many.

I have 4, but one does not fit... it's a kid's, so it is shorter in length. I can't get it to make the necessary pleats in Vrindavan style. I could probably wear it in the southern style, and may try that. It's really too pretty (cream and gold brocade borders) to keep folded up unused. It was a gift. The other two are from Krishna Culture, the other is from Jo-Ann Fabrics. Really... it's cream color cotton, cut to the size, ends left unstitched. It works, but I haven't worn it yet because it is kind of light. I'll wear it on a day when there's no chance of rain. :D

I am a Hindu because of other inspiring as well as aspiring Hindus. Because of devotees. I do not care for anything else but devotees who are higher than the Devatas because devotees are the best way to understand myself and the Devatas.
