Why are you offended?

I was just thinking about this....I DO get offended when my granddaughters are called the "N" word and three of my kids are called "Ragtops"........but I don't get offended when my mother inlaw is called a Nazi.....because she is a proud Americanized Nazi and a JW too.
Sorry...a bi toff topic.:woohoo:

That is why it's so important for government to stay separate from religion. We all deserve the right to our own beliefs.

I don't get offended. I get upset and tend to cry because people don't understand something very important to me. When someone calls my faith into question, it's like they're ignoring their friendship with me and putting their need to feel validated before my feelings. My path may be a lie, a piece of fluff, a crutch, a myth, or even heretical, but since it's my path, and no one else is walking it, I appreciate it if they simply let me be.

Jesus doesn't offend me. Religious fanatics trying to force their beliefs on others does offend me.

John 16:1 These things have I spoken unto you that ye not be offended.

I Peter 2:7,8 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious, but unto them which be disobedient...a rock of offense.

I am not offended when folks cut down my belief in Jesus, Jesus is an offense to them, lol. I KNOW what I believe is the TRUTH, I only dislike that I have to really struggle to communicate it clearly and effectively, and am saddened when folks reject Him, but that is just a human weakness I have.

Is there any need for the prayer to be said out loud ? when I am in doubt, I say a prayer silently. It may sound silly, but for the last six months or so, I have had an urge to pray for the safety of ambulance, police and fire services drivers whenever I hear a siren, but no one need know.;)

Michel,

Yes there is a need at times for a prayer to be said out loud. For example, when I had cancer the prayers of those for me said out loud helped me find strength to keep going. It is also my right in this country to do so. Or at least it was.

Of course you have the right to pray aloud - just not at a government sponsored function.

My aunt's stepsister was a nazi too. But that's another story.
When you Fulla Fulla's say Nazi... ummm... Define Nazi in the sense of your relatives? Nazi means National Socialist to me, and I've met a few people who are good Nazi's (ie not pregidous, just believing in a purity of the mind and patriotism) and a few of the hitler style ones.

My orginal point was that I was offended because I thought it was rude when some non-religious people here a R.E. feel compelled to try to make a debate out of it (personal prayer) when it is not any of their business. Any way, question asked and answered.

A traitor, who sold out her country during WWII and supported Hitler and in my opinion, did not pay enough for her crimes against her country and humanity. That to me is a Nazi. 'Nuff said.

Sorry to disagree,

but religious (as well as racial) bigotry directed at ANYONE offends me greatly. It's one thing to disagree, but an entirely different matter to ridicule (however innocently) someone for their religious beliefs. For those who see no problem with it, I would suggest that you adjust your sensitivity meter as it applies to others.

I agree fully. Not saying its reasonable to expect people to not get offended but it does highlight insecurity on their part, for whatever reason.

Why does it NetDoc? Is it because you let it ? I must admit that it doesn't bother me at all what people think about my beliefs.

Do you think that you are being influenced by your past experiences ?

Michel,

bullies take on many forms. Some are physical, some are mental and even others are cyber. When I see condescension directed at anyone, I feel a deep need to protect those who are being attacked. It's a matter of fairness. Bigotry, the act of considering others "less" for their beliefs is one of the great sources of hate and discord. It is ultimately derived from the pride and arrogance of the person acting in such a manner.

What about non-religious bigotry?

Bigotry of any kind is just wrong. Sexual orientation, gender, beliefs in science, beliefs in religion, race, and well... YOU NAME IT! These just have no place in civilized society for ANYONE.

Bigotry and ridicule are as much in the eye of the witness or victim as actual bigotry and ridicule

That means what? That the "N" word is completely acceptable, because blacks shouldn't be so sensitive? It seems to me that it is best to treat all people as "equals" instead of trying to dehumanize them under the guise of "free speech".

I can understand why some might be offended. Personally, I can't remember ever being offended because of what someone thought about my beliefs....that would just be a huge waste of energy anyway.
