I didn't know that, Jaiky.

How long were in the church before you became the awful heretic you are today?
I decided I'd had enough of that stuff when I was in primary school. Not as long as some.

Then you are an atheist. No?

Cheers.

Yes, I have mentioned this before in a different thread but I cannot say there is definitely not a Creator. I can say with utmost surety that if there is one, he's not the one of the Unholy Books like the Bible and/or Qur'an--all if which were written by men for political reasons. And we know what's behind politics--LIES!

So, yes, I live the life of an atheist. But I cannot say that there is or is NOT a god. And because I don't believe it can be proven one way or another my 'classification' (haha) is agnostic.

I don't think being an Atheist rocks. I want to believe but I just can't.:( I want to go to church, I want to pray to a higher power and know that I'm being listened to, I want to trust that my prayers that I once prayed to end the wars, destruction and disasters that take place on this earth will be answered. I tried, and I feel like it's pointless.

The best thing about being an "atheist" is never having to say you are sorry.

The next best thing about being an atheist is living a life without "sin".

1. I don't have to go to church! I mean seriously, it's so nice to just wake up on a sunday and lie in bed smelling like saturday night's takeaway.
Agreed. It's nice having two days in which I don't have to go anywhere.

2. I feel constantly motivated. Sometimes when I'm sat in the house it dawns on me that I'm doing nothing. I suddenly have a breakthrough and storm out of the house like a mad scientist screaming "there isn't a moment to lose!!!!" (often with my slippers on  )
I don't always feel motivated. But I do feel there is pressious little time to get anything done.

3. I have no vicar telling me I'm bad because of what I do, or who I do.
But we still have other people do tell us that.

4. Since becoming an atheist I have grown very interested in science. One scientific theory is very close to my heart and has raised my consciousness so much. Because of this theory I have such great respect for nature and my place in it. Thanks Charles.
I like being able to read or watch whatever I like. I enjoy observing and learning about nature very much.

5. Life just seems so short, that's the greatest gift atheism have given me.
It is a nice and comforting thought that there is an afterlife where we can enjoy ourselves without any pain or suffering. But I just can't believe in it. So it is important to make life something worth living.

Cheers.

Personally, I find it rather dificult to take seriously a thread about atheism started by a self proclaimed atheist who has chosen the screen neame "Devil's-Chaplain"

But then, perhaps it is just me.

I'm in a good mood tonight so thought I'd start a happy thread! I was thinking about how good being an atheist is; I came up with these top 5 reasons. Being a former christian some of mine are sort of based on things I used to hate back then. Feel free to add your own reasons why atheism rocks, you don't have to give a top 5 or anything though, I hate when people ask for that!

In no particular order:

1. I don't have to go to church! I mean seriously, it's so nice to just wake up on a sunday and lie in bed smelling like saturday night's takeaway.

2. I feel constantly motivated. Sometimes when I'm sat in the house it dawns on me that I'm doing nothing. I suddenly have a breakthrough and storm out of the house like a mad scientist screaming "there isn't a moment to lose!!!!" (often with my slippers on  )

4. Since becoming an atheist I have grown very interested in science. One scientific theory is very close to my heart and has raised my consciousness so much. Because of this theory I have such great respect for nature and my place in it. Thanks Charles.

  1. Except half the time the reason that you smell like Saturday night's takeaway is because Saturday night's takeaway has been vomited up on your pillow.
  2. Without religion, it's called doing nothing. With religion it's called prayer. In any case, if you go running around like a MAD scientist, this is just further proof of the dangers of athiem.
  3. No, you just have your own internal conscience, and that guy's much harder to ignore.
  4. But science doesn't have ALL the answers. The Bible can answer everything. You may say that while the Bible gives answers, it may not give accurate answers, but if science doesn't have the answers either, how do you know the Bible isn't accurate?
  5. I'll take a hit out on you, now your life will be even shorter.

I enjoy the utter lack or morality, the emptiness of the soul and meaningless life of despair that comes when one does not believe in gods. The surefire road to Hell is quite nice, also.

:D

I often wonder why many theists think that atheists have no morals.
I don't recall that it was atheists or agnostics who: flew airplanes into the WTC on 911, attacked Iraq, a nation which even President Bush recently conceded had nothing to do with 911, who launched a murderous bloody minded invasion of Lebanon. These atrocities were conceived, pulled off, or instigated by Muslims, Christians, Jews. All believers...

Atheist have a sense of ethics and morality whilst "believers" you would gladly commit every atrocity possible if they thought that their god condones and commands it.

Atheism rocks! I just love the freedom that being atheist gives me.

If this ex-atheist, now theist might comment: It's been my experience that the theists who say this have never actually known any real athiests. They just assume that morals can only come from religion and haven't bothered to look for themselves and see if it's true.

I remember waaaay back in high school taking an elective called "The Bible as Literature." Actually, it was one of the best classes I had in HS, but I was the only atheist there.

One day the subject came up about atheists and morals and belief and I asked the question: Who would you rather have as your neighhbor? Someone who says he believes in Jesus and breaks the commandments, or someone who doesn't believe in Jesus but follows the ethics?

It was clear that none of the kids in that class had ever entertained such a question before.

I wish I had photos. :D

Atheism makes its own demands on the individual. It's not like there's a handy manual to follow, eh?

Caveat emptor, athiests... remember that believing that there is no god takes just as much faith in believing that there is one. This is especially true since modern science, while quite fascinating and generally useful is still hampered by its' relience on empirical data which is at its' nature logically flawed and subjective.

It's my personal feeling that if there is a god - and that is still quite a possibility - I will not feel comfortable simply believing - the god as he is understood to me will be self-evident and I will know him. In the meantime, I live a righteous and just life without need or desire for a congregation to appease and reinforce my ideals.

Don't go messin wit my thunder. I was in a good mood til.....you said caveat emptor....and it takes as much faith believing there is no god as it does believing that there is one.

You missed our whole point. The world over has more than just the "One" god.. exp...(Hinduism).....

So one has come to their own conclusion that there is a God or gods..... OK....This is VERY MUCH THEIR ASSUMPTION.... They go through their lives convincing themselves that there are gods in order to answer questions they don't have the answers to...You know what...even after assuming there is a god(s)... they still don't have the answers....Just more questions...

"logically flawed and subjective"

Come on now...NO YOU DIDN'T.......!!!!

So the assumption that god(s) exist is not flawed or subjective.....????? (Christianity---Hinduism).... Sounds flawed and subjective to me.....:areyoucra

Ahhhhhhh.....

You guys must be former catholics, yes

Naw dude....Born Athiest..... I have always taken an intrest in learning why people live the way they do or believe what they believe. It's interesting. I would never try to sway some one from being what they want, believing what they want...etc....

But since this is a forum and people like to come here to express themselves then that's when it is time to get jiggy wit it.....teeeee heeeee heeee:)

It's nice to have a serious debate with some one because it helps, at least me, to get an understanding as to why the person believes or feels they way they do.

It's not pointless. You want to be listened to that's the point......You want war to end ... that the point....You want destruction on earth to stop....that's the point.....

The biggest point is NONE of this will happen unless WE (man) changes it.

We should not be waiting on some unknown, unseen something/nothing to come and rescue us from the decisions we have made that has put us in the situations we find ourselves in.

My car is stuck in the mud...do I wait for the great gig in the sky to swoop down and push me out of the mud of do i get off my duff and make it happen....?????

I make it happen.....
