Why believe in god?

It has always bothered me that people can take the words of others, even supposed leaders (the pope, the president, a priest, or even Isaac Newton) and accept whatever conclusions they have come up with. They have no idea what happens to you after you die nor "whether or not the Universe was an accident."
My views come long before I ever learned this quote.
Blame me for liking what Newton said. The way he said it is wonderful. Each one of us is skeptical of the Universe, and we all study it our own ways... but now or then, I still cant say it any better than that. When we live in a world where influence creates the majority of outcomes, the wording of what Newton said and how will allways be aknowledged by me.

It has allways bothered me that some people believe that humans are sheep and follow so easily.

In my opinion, we believe in god if deep down we feel the need to believe in a god. It isn't based on whether or not a god actually exists, it is based on whether or not we feel the need for a god to exist. Some look at the world, and see it's beauty without the need for a god, and therefore don't believe in one. Some look at the world and see its beauty with the need to believe a god created it. Some feel it more logical that a god does not exist, some feel it more logical that a god does exist. Some feel that god is an impersonal force, others an anthropomorphised concept with human emotions. Some base god on natural concepts from the environment, others base it on intellectual concepts from the mind. Even if a hundred people saw the exact same sunset, in no way would the perceptions have a ratio of difference comparable to that of the concept of god. I believe the concept of god is not based on empirical, objective perception. But subjective, emotional perception. Our concept of god is completely individual, your god is your god. But it can not, and never will be, my god.

MV, that was very well said. frubals!

it reminded me of a quote in a book i'm reading about prayer- "you will know when you need to pray. you can not force prayer anymore than you can force faith. it must come naturally and be born of a spiritual thirst".

Why believe in God ?- look around you ! I believe in evolution, but there must have been some pretty powerful and astute 'being' to have set the path for evolution, by planting the tools for it in this universe.;)

Gracie, I like that quotation :D! It's soo true. I don't feel like I can force myself to pray. I generally just pray at random points throughout the day, but I feel like it has to come naturally. It can't just be, "oh it's time to pray, let's do it." I have to have the right mindset. Generally I am in the right mindset, but when I'm not, I feel like praying is being dishonest.

Sorry Gracie, I missed your comment - and have only noticed it now that someone else has picked up on it! I pray in random places, when the mood comes over me - but I have noticed that when I am feeling low, I'm a bit reluctant to pray..... I hadn't thought that out until I read the comments you made.

I dare say this sounds stupid, but it's a bit like when I go to see the doctor, and I'm feeling really bad - I put it off and off. The only timme I feel comfortable going to see him is when I have some positives to point out to him!

Writing all that down has made me realize that it sounds 'anti - common sense'; anyone else Identify with that ?:)

michel-

i don't see a problem with that. those of us who pray do so in a myriad of ways.

pray when it feels right to you. just so long as you're taking care of your spiritual self!
