I am guilty of it too. I have yet to see anything actually get accomplished in any thread. Though it may be fun to debate, what is the point? Boredom? Like stirring the pot? Some hope that you'll actually convert someone to your way of thinking? I am not going to be moved from my opinions, and I doubt you will either. Maybe we should all just sit down and sing a song!

It wasn't my goal either when I first got into internet debating. But it was the inevitable consequence. Over the past 12 years of doing this I can count on one hand the number of other minds I helped change on any particular issue. But my own positions have dramatically shifted.
