Why do cities exist ?

And are they a good or bad thing for humanity ? I personally think that cities have brought some food things into this world but generally cities are breeding grounds for human evil. Because of the dehumanizing industrial elements and to many people in one place.
Should I guess, then I think the most crucial reasons were protection, trading and community. A lot of things are much easier to do in a community compared to being spread out all over the place.

You brought your money with you.

Do you see a possibility for everyone to live
in such small towns?

Sort of, most of our money is still in the UK but accessible

Nope, people can and will live where they need to or want.

I mean, you dont have to earn a living
there.

Im thinking, no cities anywhere.

Billions of people.

How do you think that would work out?

I don't;-)

There seems to be enough work around now but if there were no cities i guess we'd have to adopt pre industrial work practices and get rid of about 99% of the population

Vegetation or savage is the worst. A town in the town is the thing for human. I work on that. Note that I stay in the huge town.

One can make their city yard appear to look like it's in the country. Ours I call "Mediterranean Zen", namely we got lots of shrubs and trees in a Japanese-type of scattering, and all of them need no watering for over a month even in a dry spell. We did much the same with our place in da U.P. until we sold it 5 years ago.

Hunter-gatherers are usually nomadic, moving as resources are depleted, owning no more than they can carry. When humans developed mechanisms to garner resources permanently from a given site they could then build permanent structures, accumulate goods and even gather resource surpluses -- which needed to be stored and protected from the depredations of other groups. This also allowed for specialization and fostered wealth and status inequality.
Permanent settlements grew in size, population and complexity.

With the ongoing digitalisation and electronic communication, more people than before will be able to work from anywhere they like. But for many that still will be a city. Cities are not only the places where work is but also where culture is.

Cities enable individuals to specialise at various tasks to a far greater degree than is possible in small communities, which leads to greater prosperity of the society.
