Why exactly is it that it is inappropriate to go about public spaces in the nude?

I know that it is, but why?

Why do humans wear clothes when there is no need to keep warm or dry?

What's wrong with everyone seeing each others genitals?

Why is it inappropriate to be naked?

There must have been a point when it wasn't..... so what changed?

And why is the desire to be clothed rather than nude such a strong and powerful one?

We don't have fur coats like most animals.

Personally I'd rather go naked than wear animal fur anyway.

Just a wild hypothesis: it's because of brain development.
Afaik humans are unique in that they go through puberty, a phase when our already complex brain gets rewired.
A hint why there might be something to that hypothesis is that children don't naturally feel the shame to be naked. We only develop shame during puberty when our bodies and minds go through transformations we might not at all be OK with. We are conscious of the unfamiliar new body features and don't want to show them.
What do you think?

Have you ever cooked with oil or on an open flame nude? Do any animals cook food.
Agricultural farming in the nude, I sure that's a fun experience. How many animals are farmers.
Livestock farming in the nude, another fun experience that animals don't do.
Even fishing in the nude, you would need a ton of sunscreen on a boat all day but some light clothes and a hat no third-degree sun burn, and you survive another day.

So, I would guess soon after humans conquered fire or farming clothes were adopted. They were simple to make and provided extra benefits. Then when we moved to the colder regions and started boat fishing, they became a necessity. The more industrial we became the more important clothes became.

I think it makes sense but I don't know if it's true or not

Yes and I still never saw -40f anywhere else except in Illinois/Wisconsin along lake Mich. Brrrrrrrr.
We had a place just west of Marquette in da U.P., and we hit -40 F. periodically. However, we did set a record one year at our place with 320" of snow over the winter. Buried!

You betcha!

I came out one morning to the driver side of my car being a sheet of ice. Had to chisel into the door lock at 6am.

My mom tells me stories about getting over 8ft of snow one night in a blizzard in up state NY.

Before my time by many years...
