Why do many Sunnis and Shi'as hate each other?

There is no hatred between the two sects. And there had never been a fight between them in Iraq and Syria until the USA invasion of Iraq and Gulf states' meddling in Syria which I believe is the main cause. So, it is all politics, which has nothing to do with sects.

Salaam,

Although there is no doubt that 'Western' meddling in the region has sought to exacerbate the issues for 'Western' ends, the issues began earlier in history. Ismaa'eel I's conquest of Iran and Azerbaijan and the resulting Safavid dynasty (which at their height controlled not only Iran and Azerbaijan, but also Armenia, Bahrain, large parts of Georgia, the North Caucasus, Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan, and neighbouring parts of Syria, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan) had a great (negative) impact on the relations between the Sunni and Shi'a sects, the consequences of which are still being felt today.

Wassalaam

I've been reading about the growing instability in Iraq and how now Shi'a militias have been targeting Sunnis now. ISIS killed Shi'as by the thousands. And this has been going off and on for centuries. I've heard bad things about each sect from Sunnis and Shi'as as well.

Why is there so much hatred between the two sects?

I've wondered about this as well.
Is it because they each think they have the correct teachings of Muhammed and the other doesn't?
Isn't that also similar too and why they fight with Jews over who recieved Abrahams inheritance Issac or Ishmael?

True. Brother, if one studies "Memories of Mr.Hempher, the British spy" will find out how British intelligence agency played a dominant role in the foundation of "Radical and wild Islam". They ruined and still ruining the brotherhood between Muslims.
They train so many clerics and scholars for years and inject them to our religious system. Can you imagine?!!
There was a Shia cleric in Iran decades ago with so many abilities(technologies given by British government to him to deceive people). He used to say, "The one who loves Husain ibn Ali (a.s.) must not fight with oil exports"!!! Later they found out that he was a British spy.
There are so many clerics in both Shia and Sunni side that spread rumors and add fuel to fire!
See Yasir al-Habib and Fadak channel or Allah-Yari and his channel, who claim to be Shia and insult Aisha and Sunni Muslims. Who do you think support them?!
The answer is: USA and British government!!!
How come?!!!
The British government which killed 8-10 million Shia Muslms in Iran, now is supporting Shia channels?!!!!

We need to be careful.

I agree with this, but, do realize that the american government does the same thing to its own people.
In america, everyone is labelled and categorized so thst the media can manipulate and pit groups against each other to serve political agendas

Its a divide and conquer tactic used the wirld over.

Shia and Sunni Muslims share almost 98% of the beliefs. The problem is that both sides are living in rumors and it's really bold in Sunni side. The brain of some of them is full of rumors and wrong information about Shia Muslims. These are the questions about rumors that they may ask me:
-Why do you think Quran is not complete?
- What is Mus-haf al-Fatimi?
-Why do you think Gabriel betrayed Muhammad(pbuh)?
-Why do you insult the companions of Muhammad(pbuh)?
- Why do you say prayers three times?
- Why do you say prayer toward Karbal instead of Kaaba?
Some clerics and TV channels spread rumors, it's 2016 and the people dont bother themselves study and do research they give their brain to TV channels!

I'm not much educated in Sunni - Shi'a conflict because I don't bother who is right or who is wrong because this conflict looks more of a political battle to me. The only distinction I make between Muslims is good Muslim & bad Muslim. Do you face Kaaba, Karbal, random side? I don't care, as long as you do good you are good and Allah will judge the weight of our good & bad deeds.

Indeed. The aim is to be a good Muslim. :)

Of course, Shia and Sunni discussions have some political issues. And the fact that Islam has got some political aspects, is undeniable. Islam is a comprehensive plan of life, it never ignores any aspect of human life including political movements and leadership.

Allah will judge based on the weight of our good & bad deeds. The works that we could have done. The works that we had the duty of doing. Brother, here are some Hadiths of prophet(pbuh).
-If a Muslim observes a Bid'ah(a wrong new work) in Islamic society, he must use all his effort and knowledge to deal with it.
-If a Muslim founds an innocent person who needs his help(against the cruel people) and he ignores the innocent, he is not from me.
Shia Muslims face toward Kaaba in their prayers, and it's just rumors that they face Karbala. And if you and I find a Muslim who faces any other path when he/she says his/her prayer, we have the duty of talking to him/her as it is Bid'ah.
If you and I find a cruel politician, king, ruler or... who annoys innocent people, we have the duty of denouncing it. At least in our heart. We cannot ignore it.
Islam has got 5 pillars and 10 sub-pillars. Here are two sub-pillars
- Amr bil ma'ruf (Ask people to do good works)
- Nahy an al-Muknkar (Ask people to avoid bad works or dont let people do bad works)
In many cases, both of those who commit bad works and those who ignore their deeds are punished by God. You can detect it in Quran. God dislikes silence of those who ignore bad deeds and punishes both groups. In any field.

Both Shia and Sunni regard Husain ibn Ali(a.s), the grand child of prophet(pbuh) and the 3rd Imam of Shia Muslims, as the chief of Heaven's youth. Prophet(pbuh) himself called him with that name.
Husain(a.s.) gave his life and family fighting with the cruel king, Yazid. He said: "The main goal of my rise is to perform "Amr bil ma'ruf and Nahy an al-Muknkar " and help the religion of my grandfather stay alive".
