Why do most men shave?

I'm a man and I don't

I have had a beard for years

I don't see why other men shave apart from it being a convention....

But why has it become a convention????

What advantages could it possibly confer?

If you are a man who shaves please explain yourself!!!

I have attempted to have a full beard. Mine does not grow in evenly. It's a hot, itchy and generally uncomfortable matter.

I don't shave daily...about twice a week...

I do have a goatee, which I keep trimmed short because otherwise it's hot, itchy, and generally uncomfortable when it gets longer...I prefer the look of my face to have facial hair to some degree...but this is what actually works without being uncomfortable.

I can't really say why others shave or do not shave. But I shave because I prefer the feel and the look.

I'm bearded, so can I play? :D

I think it goes in waves, fashion and style dictates, and a matter of monkey-see-monkey-do. Mostly monkey-see-monkey-do. Something starts the wave and men follow. Hairstyles are no different. I wonder how long the bald-by-choice and its variations (bald w/full beard; bald w/goatee; bald and clean shaven) trend will last. I've had my (full) beard for almost 10 years, with only two occasions when I trimmed it down to a goatee (never again!).

I can only answer for myself. I was told that an unemployed male ought to shave. I thought it good discipline. Now that I have a job I have a beard.

There are good reasons I think to suspect that shaving rules in the workforce come for a few reasons. 1. antisemitism 2. hygiene 3. catholics 4. military.

There definitely is antisemitism, so I think it very reasonable to guess that this plays into the 'No beard' policy at many workplaces such as IBM and Ford. The founder of Ford motor company was a raging antisemite, despite his clever policies about technical things. IBM has always had a very strange policy against shaving, inexplicable and arbitrary. Like many corporations its stated reasons have questionable value, as corporations are full of empty and false reasons for arbitrary rules about many things. These two influential corporations with their original prestige are examples of historically large businesses which other businesses copy for no real reason, just as companies often copy arbitrary choices of market leaders today. Take for example Apple. Lots of companies imitate Apple practices, despite there being no real benefit to it. Its a superstitious following of the success, hoping a little rubs off without knowing how. The same is true I think of Ford and IBM in the 20th century which set various standards that would make it difficult for a Jewish or Muslim male to work without religious compromise. All of this is guesswork but is very reasonable since the taint of antisemitism is not a guess but is plain everywhere I go. To me the inconvenience, expense of shaving and the arbitrary nature of shaving counter any advantage in any job that is not involved in food service or medicine. Why make it harder to find good employees? Why add restrictions that don't help the company? It is suspicious.

Hygiene is probably the most obvious legitimate reason, and hair of all kinds requires covering in workplaces involving either food or where infection is a risk. This doesn't apply though in manufacturing, service or other kinds of jobs and is arbitrary. I think rules against beards are mostly inertia from some imagined vague sense of how its been done for a while now.

Historically the Roman catholics have been against beards for a long time, starting in the time of the Hugenots. The Hugenots were a faction which preached opposing the policies of the RC, and they all wore beards. Therefore banning the wearing of beards seemed like a good idea at the time. Before that beards were not of any concern among catholics -- or so I read in a textbook 35 years ago.

Don't ask me why the military sometimes bans beards and sometimes doesn't. Nothing they do makes any sense when it comes to style.

It indicates social status, or claimed status, within the conventions of the time.

Mostly to keep the food bits off my facial hair.

That's an interesting point

Yet traditionally God and Jesus are depicted with beards and they are both on top of the social hierarchy as traditionally imagined

People engage in all forms of self care and grooming because it improves mental health in the form of self esteem and self worth.

Someone who refuses to take care of themselves (whether it be appearance, hygiene, etc) is actively engaging in a form of self neglect and sending both themselves and other people the message that they don't really care about themselves.

Apparently it was supposed to help me get a job. I shaved for my past four interviews and nothing, so the mustache is coming back.
Why do you think that might have been?

Because people don't prefer to hire people who send the message to others that they don't care about themselves.

The "social convention" or status stuff is all a long lagging secondary IMO. The status idea is bordering on the ridiculous IMO.

What about people who take good care of their beards, who keep them well groomed and clean and tidy?

The trends we see as a result of our social conditioning, including those that involve hairstyles and beards, or none, etc. seem to be impressed upon us as things we ought to submit ourselves to, in light of the trends themselves. I agree this can give a boost in our mental states and sense of self worth, confidence, etc. but if you've never sported a mullet because it was trendy and favored per social acceptance, then you've also never known the humiliation that often accompanies the trends, themselves.

Maybe Eddi is on to something.

Or maybe it's simply about the sex and star dust, mating rituals, and peacock feathers.

Yeah that could be considered a form of healthy self care.

Russell Brand is an example - long hair, often sporting a beard.

He's far healthier now than he was when he was an active drug addict with short hair and clean shaven in the early 2000s.

I had a beard but one day I looked in the mirror and realized it had become scraggly so off it came.

I've had a beard since my late teens. Only time I've been beardless in the last 45 years was when I had chemo. Think of how much time I've saved by not shaving!

They aren't judged as members of one's current society. We make allowances for individuals clearly not a part of our current society or status community. For example, a Roman soldier or Senator wearing what would be considered a dress or gown today is clearly not part of any contemporary status community, and isn't judged by contemporary norms.
