Why Do People...?

I see a lot of thread asking why people do certain things or behave certain ways, as if the denizens of RF will come up with some sort of definitive answer that summarizes human behaviors or actions one finds suspect.

Why do people do this?

Perhaps the online version of talking about the weather.
It's cliche but I often find myself talking about the weather as a conversation opener.
At some level people need to converse. A psychological human need perhaps.
If you ain't very good at deep intellectual conversing it creates enough interest to get some response. Enough to provide for the need.

Why do people do this?
They are probably looking for responses from the people who do those certain things, or behave that certain way

If that is the case, wouldn't "why do you do this?" be a better question?
