I would like to believe that most people consider the 10 commandments to be a foundation to which they can base their faith, but I wonder why, if the 10 commandments are so widely known, why so few people keep the Sabbath Day. This fourth commandment stands out amongst the rest because it probably has the most text associated with it. In the 10 commandments, Yahweh has said that such a day is a reminder that Yahweh created all things in this world, including things outside this world, within 6 literal days and rested on the 7th.
God created the heavens and earth in six days and he rested on the seventh day. The Sabbath day or the seventh day is when God was not creating anything new, since he was resting. God does not start his work again until the eight day; Sunday, which begins a new cycle of creation. The Old Testament is what happens during the Sabbath rest of God when humans make their own choices on earth using law. Atheists often point out the point that God is all knowing so why didn't he anticipate Adam and Eve and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The answer is God was resting and stopped all working. This gave Satan a chance to act.
The question one may ask is who was in charge of humans, while God was resting? By God's own rules, one is not supposed to do any work. In the Old Testament, Satan, who was in the tree of knowledge of good and evil, was in charge while God rested. Satan gains the active role as Lord of the Earth to look after Adam and Eve after their banishment. Satan is connected to Law or knowledge of Good and Evil.
Satan is not thrown from heaven, until Revelations of the New Testament, This means Satan was condoned in heaven in the Old Testament. Satan was in charge of humans, from the Old Testament, through the time of Jesus.
The authority of Satan as Lord of the Earth can be seen in Mathew 4. Jesus goes into the desert to fast for 40 days. Near the end of the fast he is tempted by Satan. Among other things Satan promise Jesus all the wealth and power of the kingdoms of the earth if he would bow and serve Satan. Jesus does not deny Satan has this power and authority on earth to offer this, but rather Jesus graciously refuses the offer. Had Jesus accept he would have become the Messiah anticipated in the Old Testament. However, by refusing the offer Jesus goes after Satan's Job.
When Satan is finally thrown from Heaven, God ends his rest and begins to work again with Jesus at the right hand of power. Christians celebrate, not so much the original creation, as they do the second phase of creation, starting on day eight. This is connected to human development. God takes an interest again in the humans and forces their evolution via the drama within bible prophesies. In the end of Revelations, a new type of human remains, who is better equipped for the future. Satan and law ; tree of knowledge of good and evil, have been atoned for and neutralized.
