Why do so many need a god ?.

I myself don't need a god, I am happy with my own life, but I find it hard to realize that many are not happy unless they have a god in their life, what's the big deal about having a god in our life. So I suppose I am asking those who need a god in their life, to share why they do need this god, I am honestly confused to why we need a god.

Well if there was a being much more powerful than you able to help you in your life, wouldn't it be kind of stupid not to take advantage of that being being there.

A better analogy for God would be a parent for the young child, does he want to take advice from his parent or go it alone, God is hardly analogous to a blanket.

To hold power over others.
To feel valid about yourself.
To justify what you do.
To act as though superior to others.

You can have all or none or more.

It seems that some folks have a certain kind of mystical experience that lends itself to being interpreted as an experience of god. Some of those folks then end up thinking they need that god.

I am weak.
I really am. I'm tempted easily, I have no self-control and I lie a lot. I'm super selfish and a total procrastinator.

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm weak. We all are, the only difference is that I acknowledge it and seek help. I need God because I'm not arrogant enough to live without Him. And that's not a criticism by the way.

You can live without God I'm sure, but I can't. Or more to point, I won't. If that makes you look down on me, so be it. I'll keep doing it anyway because it's everything to me. He's everything to me and my life is better because of Him, I am better because of Him.

You are honest I like that. but why would you need a god to let you live your life in peace, isn't life itself enough in its self, why not just simply live your life ?.

If it were enough I probably wouldn't be a Theist, that's true.
But it's not enough, not for me.

And I do live my life, I just live it with God and for God instead of on my own and for myself. Well I try, anyway :)

It seems likely that there are various, fairly independent reasons why people believe in or feel the need for some form of deity.

Some were simply raised to accept that it is poor etiquette not to claim belief and do not feel strongly enough about the matter to rebel against that directive and have to deal with the ill feelings in the family.

As a particular case of the previous possibility, there are people that are taught to claim weakness or even "humility" as part of a protocol to enable them to speak in God's behalf. It comes naturally to one who is used to see everyone else doing the same. Quite the sickness, that.

There is some indication that god beliefs may have originated as a result of a flaw in communication between the brain hemispheres. People may have used to literally hear voices from the other hemisphere and attribute them to some unseen entity. Some obviously still do; there are clinical situations with similar symptoms.

Then there are the somewhat brighter situations. Some people may not so much need or believe in a God as find it useful or natural to express their better contents by way of those concepts, or even draw inspiration and motivation from meditating on them.

Why do you think lying , being selfish and doing things you want is count as weakness. Those are only weakness if you are afraid to take the punishment.I basically have very few internalized morals but i can fight against moral people that tries to dominate me and if necessary take the punishment. In the past i was dominated by moral people but now i gained enough power to grant myself freedom.

Saying you need there to be a God is like saying you need there to be a President, you don't need a President, there is a President, you don't need a God there is a God, whether you acknowledge it or not.

I beg to differ. God is anything but self-evident or self-existent. Quite the opposite really, particularly if one considers its consequences.

I don’t think anyone needs a god but lots of people seem happier with one so what’s the problem? There is really very little we literally need to live so the vast majority of things we all have in our lives are simply about making us happier. In that context, I don’t think there is anything special about a solid philosophical worldview nor anything special about the subsets of those worldviews that happen to incorporate the existence of gods.
