Why do we like music?

blackout

Violet.
The music I like most is free... improvised in nature.
I love spontanious, energetic jams, and long building solos.

The songs I like most always have to do with how I connect with the words.
I like to find my own personal meaning in lyrics,
so the more open a lyric is for (poetic) interpretation,
the more I like.

Or I may just connect with the message in a lyric,
and as well, some of the primary musical "devices" employed in the composition.
(ie... a catchy hook... or a contrast in sections... or even just an "attitude").

As a musician, I have found
that if I can connect with maybe three primary elements of a particular song,
that I can enjoy the experience of playing/performing that song.
(even if I would not say it is one of my "favorites")
When I can find a way to put a personal twist on it,
or incorporate a "jam" section (improvisation) ,
I have fun with it all the more.

Music is a communicative vibration. Everything vibrates. The stones, the trees, the animals, the rivers, everything vibrates. Everything is a glorious song. That is why everyONE can play an instrument and everyONE can BE creative with music.

Not all music has order. Some of it actually has a pointed lack of order. And I don't think many people feel "imposed" upon by music, unless you're talking about being subjected to the bass lines throbbing from a car down the street.
Music can definitely soothe, but in general it seems to illicit emotions from us. Sad music can make you cry, angry music can make you wish your car had laser cannons... and we're feeling creatures. We read books that speak to us, we watch movies that touch us, and we listen to music that makes us feel. The emotions are always within us, but often dampened down so as not to inconvenience the rest of society.

Sometimes I like loud and crazy music and other times I like softer music to reflect. Usually, I use music to express whatever emotion I'm feeling.

It seems like music is for reflecting our emotions.
I like all types of music but RAP and heavy metal.
I can't understand some of the words. It depends on
my mood. I sometimes like to listed to classical on
my way to work or towards the end of my day.
It calms me.

Music most likely evolved from mating calls, IMO. Great question why we like it!

Stevie Wonder sums it up nicely...

Music is a world within itself
With a language we all understand
With an equal opportunity
For all to sing, dance and clap their hands
But just because a record has a groove
Don't make it in the groove
But you can tell right away at letter A
When the people start to move

They can feel it all over
They can feel it all over people
They can feel it all over
They can feel it all over people

Music knows it is and always will
Be one of the things that life just won't quit
But here are some of music's pioneers
That time will not allow us to forget
For there's Basie, Miller, Sachimo
And the king of all Sir Duke
And with a voice like Ella's ringing out
There's no way the band can lose

You can feel it all over
You can feel it all over people
You can feel it all over
You can feel it all over people

You can feel it all over
You can feel it all over people
You can feel it all over
I can feel it all over-all over now people

Can't you feel it all over
Come on let's feel it all over people
You can feel it all over
Everybody-all over people

Music is an emotional language. The emotional message envelops us as the sound waves pass through our bodies. We become the song, and by extension we become the person who created the song. And this is the phenomena of art.

We love art because it opens us up to each other. We can feel what others feel and know that we are not alone. We can experience the world as others experience it and find ourselves in them, and they in us, while wondering at their beautiful uniqueness, too.

Music is art.

I think human beings by their nature have a need for completion and symmetry.. so within us is a need to see order and that is reflected in say mathematics, art, music.
