I don't think that you can count pop culture as "interest in" the paranormal. People read or watch that for entertainment, not for information.Really? Can you provide some examples from the ‘60s?
“Harry Potter” movies (Interest skyrocketed!!)
“Supernatural” TV series
“Amityville Horror” TV & movies
“Poltergeist” movie
“The Exorcist” I & II (Granted, the first one is kinda old.)
On and on…

In the 60s and 70s there was more "science" (well, pop science of the worst kind) involved. People wanted to know, not just be entertained.
But I grant you that pop culture is an indicator of what people are interested in and I think that superstition is on the rise again. But then again, it was never really down. I'd bet there never was a time in any country when less than 50% of the people believed in some kind of supernatural.
