Why do young adults confuse middle age for old age ?

To the young, middle age & old age are so
far off that they're effectively the same.

It's like being on top of a skyscraper.
Looking down, an uncle resembles an ant.
That's exactly what I was thinking and it's probably true vise versa for middle aged and old people looking back at being a teenager or young adult it's so far gone that they can't even comprehend what it's like to be a teenager or young adult anymore.

With kids & now 1 granddaughter, I'm keenly
aware of the vast differences between young
whippersnappers of only slightly different ages.

people in there 30s are still young adults and not middle aged you are wrong about that and most people in there 30s don't decline that is also a load of ignorant nonsense most people in there 30s are still physically active and mentally sharp.
I'll take a guess from your user name you were born in 2002, so you're not speaking from experience. LOL Boy, are you in for a surprise. Namaste

I don't appreciate you calling me boy that is insulting to me now I will ask for an apology if you don't apologize then I will be forced to block and maybe report you. And no I don't have experience in middle age but that doesn't mean that I cannot talk about it.

Do what you need to do, girlfriend. I didn't call you a boy, and I don't know you, so you can't be my friend, so --- hmmm? Could these references be figures of speech? You have my apologies for your misunderstanding. Take care.

I ain't old yet. :p I am quite firmly middle aged.

But I'll be fine with it when I am. :D

These are my thoughts as well, but I guess it helps that I look much younger than I actually am. Still, time is a limited commodity and I try to take every day one stride at a time and enjoy life while I can. We all gotta die some time, but today is not that day

I looked young for awhile, but one day it all hit me like a ton of bricks...

Don't care, though. :D

I'll have my day too some day, but maybe not! Maybe I'll be getting all the ladies at the nursing home? Assuming I'm still single then, of course!

I don't get it ? It should be simple to understand that middle age exists and that it is not old age but young adults are so incredibly ignorant of middle age that to them they think that it is the same thing as old age when it is not. Or maybe they aren't ignorant and just simply want to erase the concept of middle age altogether ? Someone help me understand this.
Me neither!

I do have three related facts, but I'm not sure what to make of them: #1 People are living longer and with better health than we did 200 years ago -- especially females. #2 During my childhood and even now my government lies to consumers. It directs us to buy lowfat, to eat 'Cereals' etc. and generally has helped caused a diabetic crisis nationwide and increased heart disease. Its hurt or killed millions through this. Americans are thought of as fat people in some other countries, and its because of this evil thing. #3 Young people today are a lot weaker physically than they were before. The young men aren't so strong relative to women and old men. We are stronger but nowhere near as built as men used to be when life was harder and when male students were required to do 60 chin ups or some ridiculous number of chin-ups. We don't walk, or ride horses or clean stables or shovel coal. We just sit, mostly. So we are lot more like old men.

As we live longer and often healthier, what has been thought of as middle age has moved up to include an older age range. And young people often seem to think anyone a few years older than they are is old.

Wrong for the most part age stages aren't subjective.
The absolute ages and ranges aren't, but things like young, middle-aged and old are subjective categories often rendered relative to the age of the person categorizing. They may loosely correspond to a range, but most of the categorization that people do is based on appearance and not from checking ID's.
