Allowing your premise for the sake of discussion, I'd say that god likes people to be miserable. Poor people, and people who are otherwise in distress, are much more likely to be religious.

But one of the wealthiest Bundesländer is Bavaria...the hyper-Catholic Bavaria. One of the highest GDPs per capita.

Cherry-picking. What I said holds true within Europe, within the states in the US and worldwide.
If atheism produced wealth, China would be the country with the wealthiest society in the world.
Please...one cannot demonstrate a causal link between religion and wealth.
Maybe poverty is not always bad. In Biblical point of view the goal should be higher than earthly treasures.
Don't lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don't break through and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

But, poverty is an interesting word. Person who has lot, may feel poor, and person who doesn't have much, may be richer than someone who has more.
Therefore don't be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?' Because we human think that we are body, not soul. All haves and have nots are the needs of human body, not human soul.
Just once, one have an out-of-body-experience while being alive thereafter all thoughts of needs, wants, haves and have not will vanish away
