Why does Islam despise dogs?

I know that Islam considers dogs "unclean". Frankly, I don't get why. It seems highly cultural. It also seems bizarre to me. Puppies are so cute! Then I read the news accounts of Muslim taxi drivers or shop clerks denying services to people using service dogs. It makes me shake my head in dismay.

The Hadith's note for #2839 says, "The prophet did not order the killing of all the dogs, for some are to be retained for hunting and watching. He ordered to kill the jet black ones. They might be more mischievous among them."

It's not "Islam". Some of the Hadiths that some sects accept as authoritative say that dogs are ritually unclean, especially their saliva. So dogs aren't generally viewed as pets by those groups. They're to be kept outside as work and guard dogs. Other Muslims are fine with dogs as companions. There's a variety of opinion on the topic among Muslims.

Where I live dogs are considered to be a serious health risk if not controlled and kept properly!

My wife keeps miniature dachshunds and although they look beautiful and have enormous (expensive!) pedigrees they should not be allowed near the very young. You see, they even eat their own faeces until trained away from this habit, and if you imagine a little daxie PUPPY (ahhhh!) licking a baby's face, well, you get the point, I'm sure.

Dogs are banned from many of our beaches (in summer-time) because bathers don't want to walk on, swim past, or sit upon dog faeces.

The law requires all dog owners to register and ID chip their dogs at 8 weeks old, and those who are seen to let their dogs foul any public place face very big fines now.

And you don't get why dogs are considered unclean?

However, no premises open to public access can turn away medical-assistance, Canine-Partner, Hearing or Guide dogs, because that breaks our Disability-Discrimination laws. However, in countries with a high incidence of rabies and other serious illnesses I imagaine that dog-control could be even more strict than here.

So please don't pick on ISLAM about this, because most Brits I know support dog control and are totally pagan!

The Quran doesn't seem to despise dogs. The companions of the cave had a loyal canine friend who also recieved God's favour.


Surat al-Kahf:

The Prophet once related that a man who saw a tree branch in the pathway thought of removing it lest it caused difficulty to any believer. The man was granted Paradise on this act of his. He also told of a man who was parched with thirst and saw a well. He went down the well and quenched his thirst. When he came up he saw a panting thirsty dog, so he down the well again, filled up his sock with water for the dog and brought it up. The Companions asked the Prophets if there was a reward in kindness to the living creatures. To which the Prophet replied that Allah indeed forgave the man’s past sins.

Catholicism isn't Zionist, just so you know. The Church traditionally teaches that it is Spiritual Israel and the blessings and promises to Israel in the OT have been transferred to her. Certainly, throughout the Church's history, she hasn't recognized a Jewish right to Israel. The Crusaders slaughtered both the Jews and the Muslims during the Siege of Jerusalem. Jews fared better in Muslim lands than they did in Catholic lands.

You can support the State of Israel in secular/political terms but not religious terms, as a Catholic. Christian Zionism is actually a 19th century Protestant heresy.
