Why Is Atheism So Unpopular In America?

I think because there are so many religious people and when you tell them they are living a lie they tend to get annoyed.

You tell me. It is real confusing from the outside.

In a society that fervently believes that anyone born of any social status can become President, why rule that person unfit for office if atheist?

Hint: Move to a country with a separation between religion and politics.

Hummm. yep, you have a very valid point however there aren't many countries like that that you would want to live in so, what I did was move to a country that has my religion in the government then everyone can complain about me and I don't care.

I thought America had a segregation between religion and politics. I thought it was a clear statement in the first amendment.
Its in the Bill of Rights, but mainly its Article 6(?) of the Constitution. It is a clear statement though.

Anyhow, I think more than a few Americans are atheists; they just don't admit it.

Edit: The reason why the bit in Article 6 is the most important is due to original intent.
Edit 2: whoops, added a not. Probably should go to sleep now...

You can't have a separation of state and religion in a democracy. Where 80% of the populous is of similar faith with the power to vote.

NUmber one is tradition, children following their parents religion, two is the media which pushes myth as fact. three is that many churches function mainly as social clubs and recreation centers.

Yes you can.
You just have to have a government that will actually enforce it on it's own instead of being taken to court over it.
Besides which, the USA is a democratic REPUBLIC, not a democracy.

If were were a true democracy, then inter-racial marriage would still be illegal, women would not be allowed to own land or even vote, women would still be paid a fraction of the wages a man gets for the exact same job, abortion would be illegal, there would be no seatbelt laws, slavery would still be legal...the list goes on and on.

It is an interesting thing to consider that those who want the USA to be a true democracy are the ones in power, I.E. the ones in the majority.
Interesting also is that the ones in power tend to see nothing wrong with two wolves and one sheep voting on what to have for dinner...

I think the United States should be a true democracy. It would allow the true voice of the people to be known. Wether for good or bad the voice of the people would be heard and this is the only thing that really matters.

If you were a Christian, leaving your warm bed to go sit and be harangued by some preacher every Sunday while your neighbor stayed home rolling in his sweet baby's arms and didn't even feel guilty about it, wouldn't you be resentful? ;)

Hmmm. Maybe it's not that popular but the Atheists sure have a loud voice.

A loud voice compared to what? I don't think there is any comparison between how many people atheists reach with their message and how many people evangelicals reach with theirs.

Personally I think it's nothing more than a guilt trip. America being the heart, and soul of out of control consumerism, the worlds leading producer of hard-core porn, weapons etc etc.

I'm not talking about converts. For years we had this group demanding taking down all religious things in public places. They wanted to take down the ten commandments that were in front of the court house. They were petitioning to have a guy take down a large cross that was on his property. Just a bunch of stuff like that. It seems like they can't be content until they have everything their way.
