Why is everyone here at RF?

I first came here ten years ago when my interest in Buddhism was really taking off. It was a sharp lesson in just how fierce online Buddhists can be. Later the forum was also a valuable source for Modern Druidry.

It is now largely an Abrahamic site and despite my interest in religions, much of the Christian posting here has been quite off-putting. Luckily, the books and videos of John Shelby-Spong and Richard Rohr have counteracted that.

There was a promise of cake. Nearly 8 years later, I'm starting to think that was a lie.

Here ya go

I'm here because I like the people here and the types of threads that there are

For me time spent on RF counts as human contact

I've learnt an awful lot from being here

RF has definitely improved my life

I like hearing peoples' stories about their experiences, especially those that can be considered religious or spiritual in nature.

I'm not so interested in what people think about their experiences; I want to hear the story of what they experienced, without all the interpretation of how it fits into theirs or someone elses' formal religion or worldview.

While waiting to hear those stories, I'm quite happy to socialize in the fun threads, and occasionally comment in other, more serious threads, when I think I can make an intelligible contribution...

I've heard of Richard Rohr. I didn't get into his teachings. He's a Catholic priest who appeared on an Oprah Winfrey show.

He is a fascinating and very learned man. Watch some of his stuff on youtube. It is, I think well worth it.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I'm here to seek and explore. I love different perspectives and different ways of thinking, believing, questioning.

I'm not here to be social, nor anti social.

I have a neverending quest to discover truth and there are many diverse forums here to do that.

Hindu philosophy sounds interesting. Christianity and Islam i'm not at all interested in. Science and critical thinking are interesting to me in terms of what can be known, and what is true, and how people feel they are able to refute things.

The concept of God can be interesting, but often not.

Spirituality can be very interesting or totally bonkers.

Those religions I am opposed to I try to separate the good people from the bad religion. Just because people belong to bad religions doesn't necessarily make them bad people. I can appreciate the inspiring reasons people make well of their bad religions.

Are there any religions that would be compatible with ietsism?

Politics is something I find to be necessary, but repugnant, and very maddening.

I've been here, back and forth, off and on for about 8 years. I read more than I post.
It's just one of several forums I'm a member of. The only thing I like about here is that individual posting doesn't take days or months, it basically happens within hours which makes it quite an active site to which I think RF should be fairly proud of.

The Lost One
I have learned fair bit, since I have been here at RF.

Not just with Christianity that are most dominant when I was growing up in the suburb, during the 70s & 80s. Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Anglican kids were more common…due to there been more people of Anglo-Saxon, Italian & Greek/Macedonian descents in my neighbourhood and schools I have been at.

Despite my Chinese background, I was more familiar with Christianity than I was with Taoism & Chan (Buddhism).

I have learned a lot about other religions which enough me to do some researches on them, even though I had already being agnostic for few years prior to joining RF.

but I have also learned a fair bit of science too, things that I have never studied before in high school and in colleges. Things, like Evolution, Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, were not parts of studies at that time…these are the things that I have learned in the last 20 or so years, because RF have sparked my interests to explore further.

i may have disagree with numbers of members, here and there, on one subject or another, but I wouldn’t have venture beyond what I have learned, if it wasnt for my stay at RF.
