Why is music forbidden?

Now I can understand music that has harmful vocals such as certain genres of rap like gangster rap etc But genres of music like classical jazz, classical music, opera, country etc why are all these different genres forbidden?

Considering that even the Adhan, as it is recited across the world, has rhythmic tones as well as Nasheed, but why is music overall is banned? I’m confused how Nasheed is acceptable but not jazz.

The ancient Prophets of God prophesied with music, including David. I Samuel 10:5. "The Lord is my rock, my strength and my song" It is supposed to be played loud. John Lennon was the king of rock and roll. Roger Hodgson succeeded him. He was with Supertramp and it is the Rock that begat the Messiah. Deuteronomy 32:18. "Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their music". Lamentations 3:63. Rock music glorifies God and it is part of worship.

I appreciate the feed back but I was hoping to get a Muslim's perspective.

I hope this could help you:

Q1121. What are the criteria by which one can distinguish ḥalāl (i.e., permissible) from ḥarām (i.e., forbidden) music? Is classical music ḥalāl?

A: Any music which is lahwī and deviating people from the way of Allah which is suitable for gatherings of merry making is ḥarām whether it is classic or not. To distinguish the subject of a ruling depends on the view of the mukallaf as a part of common people. There is no objection to other kinds of music in itself.

Q1123. What is meant by lahwī music? And how best can one recognize it?

A: Lahwī and deviating music is that which due to its characteristics keeps human beings away from Allah, the sublime, and away from moral merits and drives them towards sinful acts and carelessness. Its recognition rests with the common people.
(See: https://www.leader.ir/en/book/23?sn=23077)

Q: what is the ruling of listening to women’s singing if the songs are not lahwī nor contains rubbish contents as far as the words and music are concerned?
A: If woman’s signing is sexually exciting or listening to it leads to vile consequences, it is not allowed to listen to it.

Music is beautiful and a manifestation of God like all beautiful things.

It happens to be by it's nature, falsehood uses it better then truth, and it will take side of falsehood. It's not that it's impossible that the few people of truth use music as good as it's used in falsehood, it's just, the way Satan works and his enticement, and the way he mixes truth and falsehood, it's a better tool for falsehood.

This is why it comes under the verses that talk about Lahwal hadith to lead astray, and although Music is suppose to be neutral, it favors lahwal hadith, and so Imams on arguing on that basis, forbid it.

Music itself is clearly not 'bad' in and of itself, the fact that we "sing" the Qur'an itself in recitation is enough to prove that.

As for Music, It has different controversial opinions since old ages, I believe the respected opinion that Music and singing are allowed, There is No direct explicit right proof either from the holy Qur’an or from the Traditions "Hadiths” that prohibit music or singing, even the prophet “peace be upon him” was greeted when he reached Medina with a song.

Music and singing are from the blessings of God Almighty.

Lahw, which literally means distraction and entertain is Not forbidden, the holy Qura’n did Not forbid lahw, it forbade only if it summon people to directly and Clearly to Disbelieve, do wrong deeds, and leave the obligatory prayer

Music itself is not deviating from Allah at all; in fact most music especially classic & light music increases the person’s musical sense and thus enhance the recitation ability of the holy Quran.

Agree, but this bad effect is relative and differs from a listener to another, it’s a personal choice depending on if the person is sexually overwhelmingly excited by the woman’s singing or not.

As-salaamo Alaykum.

Yes. Your sayings are indeed the interpretation of those q & a.

Indeed, the verse 31:6 is the point and the basis of the answers.

Music itself is not Haram (i.e., forbidden).

God bless you.

In the name of Allah. Salam. Instead of asking "why music is forbidden" we should ask first "if the music is forbidden at all"

No, not all kinds of music is forbidden. Here's a five minutes video explaining it:

I would like to add a conclusion point in addition to my formal reply in this thread, which I reached after thoroughly thinking and analyzing for years,
Lahw, which literally means distraction and entertain is Not forbidden, the holy Qura’n did Not forbid lahw, it forbade only if it summon people to directly and Clearly to Disbelieve, do wrong deeds, and leave the obligatory prayer

I want to assure and clarify in detail an important point:

Lahw “which literally means distraction and entertain “in general is Not forbidden at all in the holy Qur’an and Hadith, and it’s mentioned in the holy Qur'an in addition to trade in the same context equally, which simply means that both of them "Trade & Lahw" are permissible, But they can distract the person from the Obligatory prayer in time, and So in the same context: If trade, work, or Entertain & Distraction “Lahw” occupy the person's full time and distract him from doing good deeds like praying & praising and thanking God Almighty both in mind and verbally with a heart full of Gratefulness, obedience and humbleness towards the Divine, Then this Lahw in this special case is forbidden.

And so, this explains how there are some few traditions “Hadiths” saying that the Prophet enjoined listening to good singing in some few occasions especially in Eid and travel, whether by male or female voices, with the illustration that this singing had good moral meaning words either religiously or patriotically, And the female tone had No incline towards excitation or even mild softening.

I never found a Hadith saying that the Prophet enjoyed romantic singing or female voice inclining towards excitation or even mild softening.

And So, this gets very complicated, Because more than 90% of the singing industry is in this Category, Romantic Enticing Indirectly or Directly towards fulfilling the Emotional or Sexual needs of men or women. And For honesty this in my opinion is a very serious problem.

Even As for myself or any religious Muslim, if you ask me to encourage my mother or my sister or even my brother, to engage in the singing industry, I Know at once the bad outcome, and I will advise her/him Against this serious bad environment.

There is a great example of a famous very talented Egyptian singer in the 20th century, She started in a very respectful path singing very good religious and patriotic songs, and was very famous, but step by step she started to sing romantic songs with indirect & direct fulfillment of the Emotional or Sexual needs of men, and after less than 10 years, 99% of her work was in this bad category for over 40 more years, May God forgive her and have mercy on her.

So bottom-line, Everything in this life Has a varying spectrum with a balance between good and evil percentages, and So the honest person should consume the Entertainment product which has more Goodness and less evilness, and always ask God for Mercy & Forgiveness.

May God have mercy and forgiveness for us all.
