Why is the Quran written from longest to shortest pages

Swena

New Member
Like in the bible it has a chronical order that it follows, beginning to the end.
But in the quran its written from longest to shortest chapters, and is not in the right order. Just wondering why it is written like that, i just imagine it must be confusing to backtrack on beginning til the end.

Hi Swena and welcome to RF :foryou:

I don't know where did you get that information from as the first chapter of Qur'an consists of only 07 verses and a page long only while the second chapter is consisted of 286 verses and would take some hundred pages to print .

And also for your information Qur'an is arranged exactly the way it is revealed . For example , the first chapter revealed first and the last chapter revealed last .

Hope that helps you .

The first one is short "Surat Al-Fātiĥah" but after that it goes from longest to shortest.

I have checked on Quran.com.

But is the reason for it because at the time it was revealed to be like this.
But that must be very confusing to understand, the root of every prophet. Just curious to how muslims are suppose to get the whole picture when the story is at a different place in each chapter.

Edit: Thanks for the welcome ^^

And also for your information Qur'an is arranged exactly the way it is revealed . For example , the first chapter revealed first and the last chapter revealed last .

All Muslims know that very first revelation were verses of chapter 96.
you can find the order of revelation here

it may be correct that Fatihah is the first complete revealed chapter but there are more than 80 chapters that revealed before Al-Baqarah.

you can find detailed description regarding order of chapters of Holy Quran
Such an order serves in delivering the message the Qur'an is put for, as it has got another purpose.

If you look at the first surah of the Qur'an, namely Al-Fatihah, you can perceive that it acts as a summary for the structure and the message of the Book (Qur'an) ahead of every reader.

Being Umm Al-Qur'an (the Mother of the Qur'an), it carries all its themes; it summarizes them. It tells us who Allah is: the source of all love and mercy. Therefore, knowing who He is, we should be thankful to Him and worship Him alone. We should seek His help, and He has all the power to give us whatever we need. It makes it clear that Allah is the only One Who can really guide. It speaks about life after death and the consequences of human action and behavior.

The same holds true for Surat Al-Baqarah. The first verses speak about the fact that this Book is above all doubts and it is beyond the abilities of doubters to try to challenge its validity. Then it gives a hint on its main theme — guiding the righteous — and then goes on to speak about the beginning of creation and the story of Adam to establish the theme that humankind is here on earth as a vicegerent of the Creator and should use the Book as a manual to carry out the mission in the right way.

All these themes and messages cannot be carried except through this logical order in which Allah commanded for the Qur'an to be put. If a surah like Al-`Alaq was to be put at the beginning instead of Al-Fatihah, it could have given a significance of course and give a message, but not the exact fully wonderful message that we can get from the order of the Qur'an as it is now.

You know Fatiha means opening/beginning/introduction . This doesn't make sense if some other chapter/verses revealed before it . Almighty ALLAH placed Surah Fatiha in No.01 and also named it 'beginning' just to confirm that it is the beginning of HIS revelation and the first chapter of Qur'an in any respect. It is quite logical and make a 100% sense . It doesn't matter what the popular belief says .

so according to your knowledge, "Recite in the name of your Lord who created -" wasn't the first revealed verse. right?

The second is true not the first one . It is not acording to my knowledge but the way ALLAH (swt) arranged the Qur'an .

Chapter Name : The Beginning/The Opening .
Chapter No. : 01 .

Do we really need to think more ?

Muslims accept that the Quran was the revealed word of God. It was revealed in a way to inform, support and guide the Holy Prophet and through him his followers as the community developed.
The verses revealed were revealed as guidance for them during his lifetime, starting as one individual developing into a structured society. Some verses being revealed as the need arose.
They provide us with both information and guidance but our need is not at the same level as his need because our society is at a different stage.
God decided the order of the verses and chapters and during and in his lifetime Muhammad taught this to his followers and many of them memorized the whole Quran as did Muhammad.

DawudTalut

Peace be upon you.
Like in the bible it has a chronical order that it follows, beginning to the end.
But in the quran its written from longest to shortest chapters, and is not in the right order. Just wondering why it is written like that, i just imagine it must be confusing to backtrack on beginning til the end.

Peace be on you.
1- The Holy Quran was not collected in the sequence as it was descended in.

2- The chapters of Holy Quran are not placed according to their length.

3- The collection were not work of any human, or Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be on him). It was purely by the guidance of Allah:

“Surely upon Us (rests) its collection and recital / spread.” [chapter 75 : v 19]

4- All chapters are connected in their subjects.

5- For a perfect Divine Book of complete wisdom, which has to teach creed and virtues for all times, it is essential that its initial part according to the descend of revelation should not be same as initial part according to final compilation. The reason is that when such Divine Book starts to address people, they are fully ignorant about its message but after passage of time, they begin to know the message up to some degree. That is why, the order of revelation of Holy Quran is different than the order of final compiled shape.

6- After getting the Quranic revelations, under Divine guidance, Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be on him) would ask the assigned-writers of revelation to put certain verses at certain place.

7- The verses, which were descended first of all, were of chapter 96, (verses 2-6):

“Convey thou in the name of thy Lord Who created,
Created human from love, [i.e., love is present in human base; The word ‘alaq’ has meanings: love, hate, suspended from, a clot of blood]
Convey and thy Lord is Most Generous,
Who taught (human) by the pen,
Taught human what he knew not.”

COMMENTARY
These verses are commands to start conveying the message. It is said that, to convey Divine message to others is the right of Lord which human must pay because Lord has created him, and has put His love and hate for Satan in him. Allah has bestowed progressive powers to human therefore, He taught him learning and writing so that he can distribute and save his knowledge for the world.

The subject of conveying the message to humanity is also present in the chapters which were descended in early time of Prophet-hood of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.).

Thus it appears in chapter 74, verse 2-4:
“O thou who has wrapped (thyself with thy mantle),
Arise and warn,
And thy Lord do magnify.”

And similarly, chapter 73, verses 2-6 said:
“O thou who art bearing a (heavy responsibility),
Stand up in (Prayer) at night except a small portion thereof,
Half of it, or make it a little less than that,
Or make it a little more than that and recite the Quran slowly and thoughtfully,
Verily We are charging thee with weighty word.”

All these three examples of early time revelations; they are stating attributes of Allah the Exalted, purpose of creation of human, need of worship, evil in the world. These verses were also preparing Holy Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be on him) to ignite a fire of love and enthusiasm in his heart for conveying Allah’s message to the people.

Thus in the initial time, such introductory revelation was needed.

On secondary level, more knowledge was given. It was about attributes of Allah, need for Prophet-hood, righteousness and purity, need of prayer, destiny and decision, life after death.

These matters were briefly disclosed in the early times of revelation so that world should know the differentiating matters between Islam and other religions.

8- After the Holy Quran was fully revealed, Muslims increased in numbers, and by virtue of living together, their non-Muslim friends and society understood about Islamic subjects up to some extent. The next generations of Muslims had also learned basic faith from their elders.

9- This was the time when a new order of Quranic revelation was needed which was to fullfil the needs of rest of the times to come till Hereafter. Now it was not needed to tell in the start of Holy Quran that, O Prophet, your people have gone astray, stand up and convey message of your Lord. Now the first addressed people of the Holy Quran were those who believed it and had seen Islam had successfully worked. Thus it was necessary to start the Holy Quran with the subject of the purpose of Holy Quran and the responsibilities of Muslim. In that time non-Muslims philosophers are told about the need of Islam in the presence of previous religions who would do comparative studies and discuss how the prophecies in previous scriptures fulfilled about the coming of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)……After the completion of revelation, believers' and non believers' approach to the Book become different than the time of start of revelation. A perfect Divine Book takes care both scenarios. Holy Quran is unique among all revealed Books which addressed this need. It is not a matter of objection but it is a superiority of Holy Quran.

Good wishes.

revelation order of ayah and completion order of surah are different. they are put into sequence according to completion order of surahs. so first completed surah put first. first revealed ayah was waited untill its surah is completed and then placed into the sequence.
