Why Men?

Why is it, that in religion, men have generally been held in high regard to women?

Now, i know that in some beliefs or religions women and men have been regarded equal, but in general, in all religions men have been in more than one instance been held in higher regard?

What is it that women did, or not do that made them inferior to men?

Is there a sign of that changing?

Of course i do not actually think men are superior, in case it sounded like that.

Thanks in advance :)

I believe that because in the Christian religion the fact that Adam, supposedly was created first with the woman being created as a help mate or (after thought) to be a companion. We weren't originally planned on but we became a necessity for man :biglaugh: Since man can't function without a woman telling him how...:D

I think that's just a natural extension of the discrimination against women in most cultures. Women were regarded as inferior beings, or at the very least, more delicate beings, than men. They were thought to be not strong enough or smart enough to rule countries, own property, run a business, etc. As this was a prevelant notion in many cultures, and at the time that most of these religions were putting down their roots, it is natural that these ideas would have been incoorported into the religions too.

It's not just Christianity, though, NOR is it just the ideal held by other Abrahamic faiths, but other large institutional religions (even our Dharmic religions) have patriarchal roots that are hard habits to break. Since we still elevate masculine tendencies as preferable socially, we continue to elevate men into a higher regard than women.

Not that I agree with all that, though. I think the notion is perfectly crazy. But I also see the patriarchal roots rearing their ugly heads in my own tradition. So, my answer is that it's habitual, and we're doing what we can to break the habit in order to evolve. :)

May I give an "Amen" to that.......;)

The plain fact of the matter is men (males) would cease to exist without women..and vice versa..One is not more important than the other..

And not only that..if women are so weak compared to men? How is it that a woman can bring a man to his knees?..And she has no need to use brutal force in order to do that either.

Why is it that dying men..will call out for their wives..or their mothers in their last breaths?

Hey Pumpkin, sweetie......The world doesn't follow it that's why there are so many different religions.....:D Surely there's one that know's how important women are.
Not so, really, a lot of things that people tend to believe today, come from Christian beliefs. A lot of freinds of mine actually think we come from Adam and Eve, even if they are atheist. A lot of them think Jesus rose from the dead, now you could say this is due to ignorace, but i dont think so.

Just as i think that women being degraded does not exclusively come from Christianity, but from Abrahamic faith. Now, i am not blaming these religions for their portrayal of women, because i have seen verses of women being degraded in the Manu Smriti, but Hinduism has never influenced the world on a whole.

BTW, Manu is Hinduism's answer to Adam and Eve. See how i said answer to Adam and Eve? That goes to show how Christian belief has sub-consciously been instilled into the minds of westerners. Other things too, like the Gita is the Hindu bible. This is a term even used by Eastern religious scholars. Christian belief has influenced every corner of the world, with its beliefs. Especially now the East is in the process of westernisation, this will be come even more apparent.

One view could be that women might be overall more physically fragile and therefore more dependent than men, but men might be overall more emotionally fragile and therefore more dependent than women.

If one takes even that simplistic view, there is at least an attempt at a balance of power between the two genders.

I don't think that works. As much as i do believe there is a balance, you can do that opposite for a lot of people. A lot of women are physically strong and mentally weak, and vice versa for men. I think it just depends on person to person. But then again we can never come to a conclusion if we always do things by a person to person way.

I can see your point, Don. But we could always start somewhere, even if it is with such a painfully simplistic view as what I offered above.

Then again, I could be wrong, too. YMMV. ;)

That is exactly what I believe..Women typically (if you just look at it from a sort of primitive angle)...are more likely to need the "physical" support of men(or even the women)..ESPECIALLY at certain times of her life..specifically pregnancy and the nurtuing of newborns..She is at that time not necessarily "weaker" but more vulnerable and in need of support from others in order to ensure her survival and that of her infant...Even nutritionally ..she needs more than her "share" at that time in order to be strong enough and have the energy it takes to nuture the infant...She also for a time cant "contribute" as much as she normally can as to other functions..So she is vulnerable and needs to depend on others to achieve her temporary primary function....

Men on the other hand...Dont have that disadvantage..But they wander around searching for a female..(in a primitive sense)..because they are not whole without her ..as you said ..emotionally.. and they are lost...And the men have to convince her...he will stick around for the long hall...and that they are fit for the job..Thats why a male peacock has beautiful and colorful feathers...He desperatley needs the female... ;)

Your absolutely right Lana.....It's another man made interpretation of the scripture.
That's why religion is in the shape it's in now....Thus sayeth the word of mortal man.;)
Charity, while much of the Bible is subject to various interpretations, I'm not quite sure how you can interpret these verses differently:

1 Tim 2:11-15 ---- 11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

1 Cor 14:33b-36--- As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Eph 5: 22-24 ---- 22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

1 Cor 11:3-10 ---- 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.

Well somone should have told the women to shut up and go hide like cowards instead of staying by Jesus as He suffered on the cross...

They also should have put tape over the womens mouths or cut their tonges out when they went to SPEAK to the MEN that Jesus (the Lord) had risen...

Maybe they hadnt gotten the memo..
