And the cost of solar, wind, bio, nuclear is cheap? That only leaves fossil, thought that was a no-no for some of you?
suggest you peruse the following:

"Hydro" is Canuckistanian for hydro-electric power.
(Yes, it really is a colloquialism.)
But you're right that hydrogen is just an inefficient (currently) energy storage & delivery means.

No, solar, wind, tidal, hydro and geothermal all generate more energy over the life of the equipment used to produce it than it takes to manufacture the parts, and they have the advantage of very low emissions (not quite zero because the manufacturing and transportation process). For domestic energy, Germany is way out ahead of the pack as usual with a very enlightened microgeneration scheme where citizens who install solar panels or wind turbines on their home can sell the surplus energy produced back to the grid, offsetting the cost of the upgrade. In Canada, a study a couple years ago found that all our domestic energy needs could be met with the use of geothermal generators.

However, I really can't see these enlightened ideas taking off in North America. Both our governments are deep in the pockets of oil barons who will not tolerate public policy that encourages energy autonomy for individual citizens, let alone a partnership with public utilities like the Germans are using. To see any intelligent movement on the energy front, we would have to vote Green or NDP, and voters both our countries are sadly far too stupid to do that.

An interesting fuel saving development....;
Rolls-Royce Drone Ships Challenge $375 Billion Industry: Freight - Bloomberg
The company’s schematics show vessels loaded with containers from front to back, without the bridge structure where the crew lives. By replacing the bridge -- along with the other systems that support the crew, such as electricity, air conditioning, water and sewage -- with more cargo, ships can cut costs and boost revenue, Levander said. The ships would be 5 percent lighter before loading cargo and would burn 12 percent to 15 percent less fuel, he said.
