why praying is a waste of time

what are you praying for , why do you pray , why do none of your prayers come true, does it sometimes feel pointless, i suppose a little pray and positivity never harmed anyone , but its still a waste of time,

....he said as he trolled the website.

I'm very sorry to hear that you feel that way, but I don't and neither do billions of other people. Prayer is coming into communion with God.

Praying is a good start for those who are still separate from god, but when one becomes one in god then praying is no long needed, after all you will only be talking to yourself.

I don't think an omniscient being would change his course of actions if asked to by a puny little spec of dust living on an insignificant rock.

I don't think an omnipotent being needs a "thank you" at all. Especially if he created a place of eternal torture for those who don't thank him.

Prayer is.. Personal.

And God is not a Genie, He doesn't grant wishes

What an over-exaggerated interpretation of what I said. An example would be help when in a troubled situation, but because all of reality is within God's Plan, this situation is part of it and I highly doubt God would change his mind. He's got it all figured out, he's omniscient. You might disagree that praying to God for some sort of thing (physical or abstract) would work out. But not all of the Christian community.

That's why I also considered the alternative goal of praying - that usually tends to be grace or guidance, which I said it is unnecessary to thank or seek guidance from an omnipotent being. It's not the least he can do in some sense, because every action God takes is the least he can do. And as for guidance? Omniscience comes into play here, as does predestination.

Let's say that predestination in this context isn't a direct path so as to not contradict freewill. However, there are many reasons for why God can see the final outcome of each individual person's life (God's plan, revelations, knowing that Jesus will some day have to return, assigning a meaning to life... etc.)

If the outcome is predicted by God, at LEAST faintly, guiding them would make no difference, they'd get there on their own, it was foreseen.

Also, I just wanted to say this - Faith is a tool for man, but a weapon of Satan. Many believers in Satan agree that Satan is deceptive and has a personality of a wicked trickster. With this, we can never actually know for sure who hears out prayers - God or Satan.

I pray to go into a deep state of contemplation and meditation. It helps me greatly and I don't really care if others think it's a waste of time.

I pray for contentment, of health, for easing of karma. Mystical Hindus actually pray a lot, and obviously believe prayers get answered. Ganesha isn't called the Remover of Obstacles for no reason at all.

But like you, I don't really care what others think.

Many theists consider it very inappropriate to degrade their prayer time to nothing more than a wish list, which insults the Almighty. Prayer is worship, prayer is a giving of thanks, prayer is meditation, prayer is many things to different people, and if it makes people feel good, if it helps give meaning to their life, as long as it harms none, why even care? It's not like anyone of us can say we are free of activities that waste time.

Wow. Really sorry, I just assumed it was a reply to mine. Some people don't use the quote box all the time

I agree that praying for things and expecting some supernatural/divine intervention is a pointless waste of time.

But the reflective aspect can be useful for an individual and the commemorative and unifying aspect useful for a community.

Sikhs aren't really supposed to pray for anything except their own self-development. You wouldn't think it though when they read out the list of wants during the formal prayer in Gurdwara! >.<

Atheistically
but its still a waste of time,

Only to the ignorant of the positive effects.

As an atheist I even see the benefits to prayer, the power of suggestion, wishful thinking, positive thinking, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel are very important for mental health and well being, add to that the physical benefits of said mental states.

+1 to those who realize the benefits even if there are no other beings/entities tuning in. The power of belief can be incredible, as well as ability to shift perception, control state of mind and much more.

Also, just as I can chew gum while walking, I pray while working, cooking, cleaning, driving, etc. If the experience is even slightly enhanced or my general feeling of well-being - no waste whatsoever.

I would wager it trumps the emotional release of off the cuff criticism or antagonism.
