Why someone would assume or group us together?

I just had soemone tell me, in their opinion, all pedophiles are gay and covering. What brings people to group things like that? How can you even connect that? This is just a prime example, but why do people associate things they personal;ly do not like with things society is whole heartedly against? Just to make them appear in a bad light, or make their point seem more serious.....?

Why?

Sometimes it's just hate. Sort of a misuse of transitive property of equality. "I hate pedophiles, and i hate gay people, therefore gay people = pedophiles."

In other cases it's the "slippery slope" argument. "If we're okay with dudes banging each other we might as well let people diddle kids, too."

But for the most part it's just insanity.

It's so upsetting to see someone hold such ignorance.....

You're right, it was extremely insensitive for me to paint homophobes with such a broad brush. :'(

I once had someone tell me that tiny people live in the ink on cash register receipts. Some people believe strange things.

Tis true, but from someone who can asess this and come to the conclusion that it's obviously not logical. How does someone else come to such an extremely different view? I can understand upbringing and environment to a certaint extent, but we all must come to our own logical ideas. Is that not the universal concept of every fundamental thing we have known...?

I believe it`s because many people have never learned to form a framework for logical thought.
Most simply accept what they are told as truth and hold it as truth throughout their lives.
When put into a position to defend these "truths" from a rational/logical perspective they are ill equipped to do so.
They start uttering nonsense or become defensive or both.

It seems to be human nature to "group people together". It happens to any group with many people.
You don't need to worry about me, though. I try very hard not to group people. Generalization is a pet peeve of mine and I would never do it on purpose. Since I don't like being generalized, I have always assumed that no one else likes it either.

I hate it, and to group homosexuals and pedophiles togetehr is beyond absurd and offensive.... Not to mention judgemental and I thought there was only one person allowed to do that....

We all hate it. No one likes to be generalized. I am sure that all the various races, ethnic groups, sexual preference, religions, etc would all say the same thing: That no one fits into a stereotype or generalization. And then there are those who hate to be stereotyped and then go and stereotype others- we call that being a hypocrite (I am not calling anyone that).

Humans do this all the time. We do it in ways without even thinking about it.

How many times have you heard someone refer to "my people". Even when you know that person has at best an obscure genetic heritage with "my people", do not even speak the language of "my people" but continue to associate themselves with that identity solely based on their grandmothers heritage, the color of their skin or whatever else that can be loosely associated.

And it's this mentality that's probably more responsible for human strife than any religion, or lack thereof, or even any political ideology.

Don't be surprised to hear people group others, stereotype them with good or bad qualities, when we so easily throw a label on ourselves and throw ourselves in a group.

edit: But the whole gay equals pedophilia even moves beyond what I just said into a different level of.......ignorance. Hate, as others have mentioned.

I have said in the past that religion and political ideology is a large part of the problem you speak of.

Both religion and ideology as well as race create "my people" and in doing so they also create "others"... those "other" people.
